Deadline: April 15, 2007
The Center for Book Arts is pleased to invite Artist Members to submit artworks created between 2004 and 2007 to be considered for the 2007 Artist Members Exhibition tentatively titled: ( Un)Contained Vessels. The exhibition is to be organized by Pamela Spitzmueller, Book Artist and James W. Needham Chief Conservator for Special Collections, The Harvard University Library and the College Library, and Alexander Campos, CBA's Executive Director.
The theme of the 2007 members exhibition examines the container not as merely a functional holding place, but as an integrated/activated part of the piece that is equally important and even enhances the art object it houses. Artworks featured in this exhibition represent a broad range of art containers that are more conceptually based and offer lyrical interpretations that challenge the traditional notion of the "box" (container). Additionally, vessels that can provide alternative presentations or unleash new meaning, form, and/or function will be considered.
Please note that The Center's gallery wall space is limited: the gallery cases cannot accommodate pieces standing taller than 23 inches or wider than 40 inches and there is limited wall space for display. Although, free-standing sculptural floor pieces are acceptable. Artists are invited to submit as many works via slides (no original artwork) for review, however, no more than 12 slides will be accepted to be reviewed. All slides must be properly labeled and accompanied by a slide list with name, title, year created, dimensions, medium/materials, and credited properly (authors, collector, etc.)
