SPACELab Exhibition Proposals

Deadline: (Ongoing/Unspecified)

SPACELab

SPACES Gallery
Cleveland OH

SPACELab is a program that was established in 1994 through suggestions made at several community meetings with area artists who felt that experimentation and risk-taking needed to be emphasized.

SPACELab provides a provocative environment for artists to present challenging, installation-based work that interacts physically and socially with the public. The selection committee, composed of artists and a representative from SPACES' Programming Committee, meets two/three times a year. Meeting dates are flexible so that we can respond quickly to the community and important current issues.

SPACELab provides a flexible, short-term installation space that encourages experimentation. It is especially useful for established artists to create a small, experimental project or as an outlet for younger artists who may not yet have a body of work but want to create a first-time installation.

SPACELab has proven to be highly popular and successful with both the exhibiting artists and the public.

SPACES furnishes the setting, publicity, opening reception, and printing and mailing of announcements for each exhibition. We pay honoraria to exhibiting artists and curators. We insure artwork in the gallery and handle sales at a 20% commission. Because of SPACES' limited resources, artists are generally expected to transport, install and de-install their work, and return the gallery to its normal condition.

Site specific work is encouraged for SPACELab applicants. Two SPACELab projects are exhibited for three weeks each during the primary six-week exhibition. Exhibitions are held in one of two areas of the gallery: SPACELab One or SPACELab Two.

Applications accepted and reviewed year-round. $10 processing fee
