The theme of TSA’s 15th Biennial Symposium is Crosscurrents: Land, Labor, and the Port. We invite participants to explore the ways in which textiles shape, and are shaped by historical, geographical, technological and economic aspects of colonialization and/or globalization. How and why have textile practices moved around? As they travel, how have they been translated, modified, or used within acts of compliance or resistance? What impact have different regimes of labor, consumption, aesthetic valuation, or political/social economy had on textile production, use, and circulation? These questions may apply to contemporary or historical fine art, utilitarian, or ethnographic textiles, which may be addressed through scholarship or creative practice.

Due to its location and history, the southern United States is an ideal place to examine the interaction between local practices and global markets. We encourage contributions that explore textile practice in the broader contexts of agriculture, labor, innovation, or exchange. We welcome historic or contemporary perspectives on the role of technology and alternative economies in shaping design, production, circulation, consumption, exhibition, collection, valuation, interpretation and use of textiles.

TSA seeks presentation proposals from all textile-related disciplines and interdisciplinary areas, including but not limited to history, anthropology, archaeology, art, conservation, geography, design, economics, ethnic studies, history, linguistics, marketing, material culture studies, mathematics, science, political science, sociology, and theater, among others. Participation of international and U.S. scholars, researchers, artists, curators, museum professionals, and others is welcome. Submission of abstracts is open to TSA members. Non-member applicants may join TSA at the time of proposal submission. Selected presenters will also be required to have an active membership at the time of the Symposium (October 2016).

In addition to our usual submission categories (papers, organized sessions, roundtables, films and other media), we are extending a call for poster sessions and for curated exhibitions. The review committee will select submissions that cogently and directly address the theme of the symposium.


All submissions should be based on original research, reflecting material not previously published. In submitting an abstract, the author explicitly authorizes its use on the TSA website and in publications including, but not limited to, the Symposium Program and Proceedings.

Individuals may complete multiple submissions.

The Textile Society of America is excited to announce a call for exhibition proposals as part of the 2016 Symposium. Organizers are encouraged to submit proposals for group exhibitions that focus on the theme, Crosscurrents: Land, Labor and the Port. Proposals may be for exhibitions of contemporary work, ethnographic, and/or historical textiles or a combination. Contemporary textile art is widely defined to include 2D, 3D, site-specific installation, video, and performance-based work.

Indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces are available.

Eligibility is the same as for other submission categories. The exhibition organizers must be TSA members at the time of submission. Non-member applicants may join TSA at the time of proposal submission. Selected presenters will also be required to have an active membership at the time of the Symposium (October 2016). Proposals will be blind juried by a panel of peers. If accepted, it is understood that the organizer(s) will register and participate in the 2016 Symposium. Organizers are also encouraged to coordinate a panel discussion of exhibiting artists, academic papers, or a roundtable. Where appropriate, these sessions may be held in the space of the exhibition.

Submissions will be handled in two parts. First the organizer(s) submit a project description with images. Submissions that are selected will be sent details of the potential exhibition space including architectural plans. In the second phase, organizers will work to formalize the project through drawings/layout and expanded project proposal. The exhibition spaces vary in size and type of facilities available (i.e. height of ceilings, natural light, installation assistance, museum quality lighting and environmental controls).

QuiltCon 2016 Show Rules

QuiltCon includes a juried quilt show featuring modern quilts by members of the Modern Quilt Guild. The quilts will be juried into the show and maybe be shown for exhibit only or entered into competition and judged. Quilts may also be entered and juried in for exhibit only.


General Rules (truncated)

• You must be a member of the Modern Quilt Guild to enter a quilt.
• Entry is open to all members from any country.
• Quilts must have not been previously entered into QuiltCon.
• All quilts entered in the QuiltCon Show must meet the following requirements:
• Have three layers (backing, batting, and top) joined together with stitching or tying.
• Have a finished binding on the edge of the quilt.
• Have been made in the last four years
• Have not previously been shown at QuiltCon.
• We cannot accept quilts with a perimeter larger than 480".
• The Small Quilts category is for quilts that are up to 36” on any side.
• All of the people who worked on the quilt, paid or not, must be credited (excluding basting assistance).
• Quilter numbers are limited to:
• Two or fewer quilters for Applique, Handwork, Improvisation, Minimalist Design, Small Quilts, Use of Negative Space, Piecing and Modern Traditionalism categories
• Three or more quilters for Group or Bee Quilt category
• Any number of quilters for the Quilting Challenge and Fabric Challenge categories
• All accepted quilts (other than those for which the quilter has selected that they be for exhibit only) will be eligible to win the following categories: Best-In-Show, People’s Choice, Coats & Clark Quilting Excellence Award and Best Machine Quilting.

Show Categories
There are several categories for quilts. Entrants are welcome to enter as many quilts as they would like. After quilts are juried, QuiltCon will determine the quilt's category during judging in early February with a few exceptions listed below.


Quilts will be placed in the following categories based on entry:
Group or Bee Quilts – Modern quilts made by 3 or more people
Small quilts - A quilt that fits into the above categories that measures 36" or less per side. The quilt can be any shape as long as it does not exceed the size limit. The challenge is open to individuals or groups. Individuals may only be involved in one quilt or group.
Youth – Entrants 18 years and younger

Quilts will be placed in the following categories during the judging process:
Applique – Quilt includes either machine or hand layering of fabric where the quilt's primary focus is applique.
Handwork - Quilt includes at least one element of handwork including, but not limited to: hand piecing, hand quilting, embroidery, redwork, cross stitch, crewel, etc. Hand stitched binding does not qualify as handwork.
Improvisation - Quilt is pieced improvisationally (without the use of a defined pattern or templates).
Minimalist Design –The design of the quilt emphasizes extreme simplification of content and form to achieve maximum visual impact.
Use of Negative Space – Quilt design incorporates a creative or significant use of negative space which is integrated into and/or organizes the composition of the quilt.
Piecing – Quilts that are machine pieced and reflect a particularly strong or innovative use of piecing.
Modern Traditionalism – Quilt design incorporates the use of an identifiable traditional block pattern and modernizes it by applying design elements such as alternate grid work, asymmetry, color, scale, etc.

The entry fee for the QuiltCon Quilt Show is $30 per entry for up to 3 quilts. You may enter as many quilts as you want.

EXHIBITION THEME

"a bag conceals // a bag reveals" will be an international event whose aim is to discover and showcase some of the most interesting textile bag creations in the world. Under the term textile fall certain techniques, such as: knitting, knotting, crocheting, weaving, sewing, patchwork, felting, macramé, etc. The exhibition focuses on both the bag’s design and the design of the textile used. Combinations of different materials are accepted; however the main material should be textile. Participants are encouraged to submit both experimental and conventional designs. Only original artwork is accepted.


ELIGIBILITY

"a bag conceals // a bag reveals" is open to any textile artists, fashion designers, crafters, designers etc of any nationality, over the age of 18. Entries must follow exhibition theme. The number of artwork that an artist can submit is up to three. Works must be ready for installation. All works must include proper instructions on how to be installed (if necessary).


PARTICIPATION FEE

A non-refundable fee for the artwork submitted is $15 per entry or $40 per three entries. Fees are paid after the acceptance of the artist’s work.



ONLINE ENTRY APPLICATION

•Each submission must be represented by two to three images: one general view and two details of the artwork on neutral background.
•Images must be in JPEG or TIFF format (max image size 1024 Kb).
•Each image file should be labeled with entry number (01, 02, or 03), last name, first name, and title (e.g. 01_Smith_John_Abstract.jpg).
•Apart from the images a short description of each work, materials and retail prices in euro should be included.

The Helen M. Salzberg Artist in Residence Program funds two working residencies for artists each academic year at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, in the fall and spring semesters. Artists working in the book arts (and other media, too, as long as the creative project can be thought of as book arts related) are encouraged to apply for this prestigious and competitive award. We accept applications from artists from all over the world.

Poet and artist Helen M. Salzberg established the Salzberg AIR Program in 2011. Income from this endowed fund enables artists working in the book arts to come to the Jaffe Center on a semester basis to work and teach at the center. While here, the artist will produce a creative project using JCBA studios and also teach a workshop for FAU students and the general public and mentor FAU students as his or her schedule allows. The Salzberg AIR Program gives our students the opportunity to work alongside highly talented and creative book artists.

The next Salzberg Artist in Residence for which we will be accepting applications is Fall 2015. The residency period is for the Fall Semester, which runs mid August through early December. AIRs are not required to be at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts for the duration of the semester. However, we do require each resident to complete his or her creative project, teach the resident's workshop, and vacate the studios by the end of the semester. The Fall 2015 Salzberg AIR will receive a stipend of $3,000.

“Life on the Prairie” may suggest amber waves of grain, the indigenous people and tribes, the beautiful prairie wildflowers, and the unique prairie animals—both those living today, as well as the fossils from prehistoric times. It might also suggest the settling of the prairie and calico sunbonnets and gingham aprons.

The state flower is the wild rose; the state bird is the eastern goldfinch; the state colors are red, white, and blue. Your entry must include at least one colored thread.

This theme can take you in a multitude of directions. It is open to the inspiration of this wonderful part of our country and to your creativity!


2015 I.O.L.I. Lace Contest Rules (truncated)

1. All entrants must be members of I.O.L.I. for the current year of the contest.
2. Teachers and Professional lacemakers are ineligible to enter the Original Design and the Technical Proficiency categories.
3. All entries must incorporate a minimum of one colored thread into the design of the lace. "Colored thread" is defined for this purpose as any color other than white or ecru. Entries may be made of one color entirely, for example all black threads. However, if white or ecru is used, you must use at least one additional color. If the thread is not obvious, the lacer must place a note on the entry form indicating where it can be found in the lace.
4. The entry can be 2-D or 3-D. The maximum size including the frame and matting and/or props is 15 inches x 15 inches for the 2-D and 15 inches x 15 inches x 15 inches for the 3-D entries. For a 3 D entry, the entrant should supply the necessary tools to display the entry properly.
5. Actual lace piece must be entered. Photo or photocopy is not acceptable.
6. The lace may be mounted or framed, but no glass, plastic or Plexiglas may be over the lace or it will be disqualified.

ii) Original Design – 1st $100; 2nd $75; 3rd $50
iii) Technical Proficiency – 1st $75; 2nd $50; 3rd $25

Our daily lives are complex and miraculous. There is an ever expanding interconnectedness that we have with one another in both our private and public lives. This interconnectedness can also feel overwhelming and pressure-filled. Communications can be ‘jumbled’ and misunderstood in a text ‘thread’, for example. Our relationships are complicated- family, friend, foe. ‘some things looming’ invites artists to connect with our audience as they interpret “Entangled” utilizing fiber techniques.


Rules for Entering: (truncated)

 All work must be original, one-of a- kind, made by the artist submitting the entry.
 Artists may submit up to a maximum of three, completed within the last three years, to be in the exhibition.
 Due to space restrictions, 2-D work must be 40”x40” or less, 3-D work on pedestals no larger than 18”x18”x18.” Freestanding works will be accepted. No
large installations can be considered. Yardage is acceptable.
 Entries must be postmarked or electronically received by July 11, 2015. No exceptions! Our entry form and entry fee of $35 must accompany your entry.
 Art may be for sale. STL takes 30% commission
 Artwork must stay hanging for the duration of the exhibit
 STL is responsible for all press releases, price lists, gallery labels, gallery sitting and listings in local media
 All work is insured while at our facility

Selection of Artwork:

Entries will be selected by ‘some things looming’ based on their quality and relevance to the goal/theme of the exhibit. Unusual, experimental, and traditional fiber work is all good. Please be certain that it is quality prepared for exhibit, completed within the last three years, and have relevance to the theme.

Selected artists are responsible for costs of shipping their work to and from the gallery.

Content: Artifact is the second of Abecedarian Gallery’s juried exhibitions for 2015. This exhibition will celebrate the artists’ book form as one that goes beyond acting as a container for information, as an object that holds more than text and/or images arranged in a set sequence of pages.

Rather than proposing a strict set of limitations, this exhibit aims to encourage artists working in the book form to use the definition, etymology or other interpretation of the word ‘artifact’ as inspiration for the creation of new works, or as a tool to select existing works for submission to this call:

Definition:
n. 1 an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.
2 something observed in a scientific investigation or experiment that is not naturally present but occurs as a result of the preparative or investigative procedure.

Etymology:
ORIGIN early 19th cent.: from Latin arte ‘by or using art’ + factum ‘something made’ (neuter past participle of facere ‘make’).

Eligibility
• Open to any artist 18 years of age or older.
• If you live outside the United States, please contact gallery for additional submission guidelines.
• Eligible are any artist book works other than SPOD (Self Published On Demand). Books may be editioned or unique, sculptural or more traditionally bound, interactive or passive.
• All entries must be available for sale during the exhibition dates. The prices you submit during the entry process are the retail prices the gallery will adhere to throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Restrictions:
• Books that measure more than 18 inches (closed) or 36 inches (open) in any dimension are ineligible.
• Wall works that require use of anchor bolts or other specialty installation hardware are ineligible.
• If your work requires special installation, please contact gallery before submitting your entry.
