The MCBA Prize is the first honor in the United States to recognize book art from across the field and around the world. The MCBA Prize celebrates the diversity of book art and encourages discussion rather than limiting recognition to one aspect of this vital field.
Integrity will determine the winning work. Integrity refers to a unity of form, materials and content that reflects an artist's vision.
Book art in a broadly defined field. Forms, processes, traditions and approaches are open. Work may include unique book objects, altered books, graphic novels, 'zines, concrete poetry, conceptual, visual and literary works. Processes may include any printing or printmaking methods such as photo-mechanical, hand-worked, analog/digital, relief printmaking, letterpress, intaglio, and screen-printing, as well as hand-lettering. Works may be in edition or unique.
The finished work can depart from a bound book format to engage metaphors of the book in sculpture or installation. Work can be created collaboratively, but ultimately must result from an artist or artists' vision and active participation.
ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS
All artists who use the book format as their primary means of expression are eligible to apply. Accepted works may range from hand-printed fine press books, to inexpensive pamphlets, to one-of-a-kind sculptural works that reference the role of the book in contemporary society. All techniques, approaches and methods of creative expression will be considered. Artists may submit multiple entries.
- Work must have been completed since August 1, 2009.
- Students are not eligible, nor is work completed as part of a degree-granting program.
- MCBA staff and board members are not eligible.
- Collaborative works are eligible with the consent of all involved parties.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINALISTS
The five finalists will be announced May 27, 2011. The winner will be announced at the MCBA Prize Celebration on July 30, 2011.
AWARDS
5 Finalists receive a $500 award, free participation in the Book Art Biennial and $750 travel and lodging stipend if the finalist chooses to attend the Biennial. Additional support for travel may be offered based on need and availability.
1 Winner receives an additional $2000 award (in addition to $500 finalist award and $750 travel and lodging stipend to attend the Biennial).

Quilts must be an original design. Quilt dimensions must be 30" in height and between "18-60" wide. Each quilt must have a 4" hanging sleeve and an identifying label on the back of the quilt.
Entry Process
The jurying process will be done from digital images only. Entrants should submit two images per entry (one overall view and one detail view). All images must be of publication quality.
Each entry must also include an artist's statement of no more than 100 words describing the story or the inspiration behind the quilt. Entries must be received no later than March 9, 2011. The number of works included in the liturgical special exhibit will depend on the number of entries submitted and the space available.
Entry Fee
There is no fee to enter the special exhibit. Each artist may submit one piece.
If your piece is for sale and the Church of the Epiphany wishes to purchase your piece, arrangements for payment will be made privately between parties. Sacred Threads will not require a commission fee.

Quilts submitted should explore themes of joy, spirituality, peace/brotherhood, inspiration, grief, or healing. Quilts must be an original design or an original execution of a traditional pattern. Quilt dimensions must not be less than 12" x 12" nor exceed 72"x 72"and each quilt must have a 4" hanging sleeve and an identifying label on the back of the quilt. Quilts exhibited at previous Sacred Threads exhibits are not eligible.
Sacred Threads will make a list available to our visitors of quilts that are for sale. We will provide any interested parties with your sale price and contact information. We do not require a commission on any pieces that are sold.

THE PROJECT
To create more public awareness for the book as an independent genre of art production, the EU-funded project “Artists’ Books on Tour – Artist Competition and Mobile Museum” was launched in June 2010 by the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art (Vienna) in cooperation with the MGLC – International Centre of Graphic Arts (Ljubljana) and the UPM – Museum of Decorative Arts (Prague). The core activities of the project cover:
• the implementation of a competition among European artists
• the evaluation of the results by an international jury awarding the best submissions
• the presentation of selected works in a “Mobile Museum” touring several European cities
THE COMPETITION
In order to bring visibility to contemporary developments in the field of artists’ books, we offer artists a platform to share their work within a unique all-European competition among book artists for the first time ever. We therefore invite artists to hand in their recent or planned art projects in the field: submissions will be accepted as completed physical or digital book objects or in the form of conceptual designs for projected but yet-unrealized book works. Outstanding works will be awarded a grant given by an international jury.
ELIGIBILITY
Artists of any age who live and work in Europe are eligible to enter the contest. Artist collectives may also apply. Please note that teams have to name one contact person (in the application form) and will be treated as a single person in the event of winning a prize (prize money will only be paid once).

“Pattern Play” is a group exhibit open to all media about ways that artists discover and utilize different types of patterns in their art work. These patterns may be derived from a variety of sources and should be a prominent aspect of the art work.
For many artists natural geometries, such as such as in the radial symmetry of a starfish, the uncurling of a fern leaf, the branching veins of a leaf, or the spiral of a nautilus shell, may be depicted or referenced in ways that reveal their patterns. Inspiration may also come from geometric formulas such as tessellations and fractals or the principles that create optical illusions. Another rich source of patterns often utilized in new ways are derived from specific cultures such as the zigzag patterns of Mexican Art that reference the tiered steps of the ancient Aztec pyramids, multitudes of colored dots that may reference aboriginal art, and intricate lattices that may make one think of Islamic art and architecture.
Although every pattern has some element such as the shape, line, or color, that repeats in a predictable manner, these predictable patterns may be utilized by artists in sometimes quite unpredictable methods or combinations.
Eligibility
Pattern Play is open to professionals and students 18 years of age or older who reside in Kentucky and neighboring states (IL, IN, OH, WV, VA, TN, MO). All work must be original and properly prepared for displaying. All work, unless indicated as NFS, will be available for sale during its exhibition at LASC. The LASC will collect 30% commission on any work sold during the exhibition.

The show is envisioned to include a broad range of plant and animal life from florals to botanicals to landscapes and beyond. 2-dimensional wall art and 3-dimensional items such as vases, bowls, plates, jewelry and garden or yard decor (bird baths, stepping stones, stakes, etc.) are all examples of acceptable items.
Eligibility
Artists living or who have studios in Orange, Alamance, Chatham, Durham or Wake counties are eligible.
Requirements
-Original works of art, handcrafted by the artist
-Any media
-Work must fit through a 2.5’ x 6’ doorway.
-All works must be of material stable enough to withstand handling and exhibiting, suitably framed and/or prepared for installation.
-Artworks should be for sale and can be restocked periodically, as items are sold, throughout the duration of the exhibition.
-The HAC will take a 30% commission.

The 8th international Kaunas Biennial TEXTILE 11: REWIND-PLAY-FORWARD will be based on the concept of repeated time / retold story. Repetition (REWIND) is understood in the context of the exhibition as a re-coding of events, while coming back to the beginning or the origins. The biennial will return to the historical practices and archetype connotations of textile by reconceptualising and postproducing them in the context of contemporary art and various media practices.

REWIND INTO THE FUTURE
Is an experimental exhibition attempting to reveal the most recent advances in high technology and smart textile. The exhibition curated by an international team will present the newest discoveries of science and examples of contemporary art using innovative technologies related to textile. The interactive exhibition and creative laboratories, which will provide many surprises for curious seekers of novelties, will be accompanied by a seminar during which scientists, artists from all over the world and biennial visitors will share their creative ideas and inspirations.Review: Conditions of participation

We invite artists to apply with a group of works or an installation project to the selection committee. It should reveal fragments of the artist’s personal story or the plot not through one, but through several textually interacting works. A personal story is a very wide concept. Doubtlessly, it is determined both by the cultural and social reality, in which a personality matures and grows.
The exhibition will attempt to present as varied stories as possible in order to involve the audience into “the world of stories” as an [interactive] journey through multicultural and multidimensional experiences.

REWIND PERSONAL STORY
This is a competition-based exhibition inviting artists from all over the world working in different media to present their works related to their personal story. In the exhibition, textile is seen from a new point of view: as a connotation, a hint and a conceptual mediator of experience. The narrative aspect is very important in the exhibition: every group of works presented by an artist will reveal and retell an individual story related to the family, the social and socio-cultural context.We invite artists to apply with a group of works or an installation project to the selection committee. The Hillsborough Arts Council seeks submissions for exhibitions during 2011. Four shows each lasting four weeks are available as part of the art walk during Last Fridays in Hillsborough. These are solo and/or two person exhibitions. The selection committee will pair artists or grant a solo exhibition.
Eligibility
Artist living or who have studios in Orange, Alamance, Chatham, Durham or Wake counties are eligible.
Requirements
-Original works of art
-Any media
-Work must fit through a 2.5’ x 6’ doorway.
-All works must be of material stable enough to withstand handling and exhibiting, suitably framed and/or prepared for installation.
-Artworks should be for sale and remain on display throughout the duration of the exhibition.
-The HAC will take a 30% commission.
How to Apply
-The application must be completed and submitted on line and materials mailed by US Post. Application is not complete until all materials are received.
-5 digital images on CD (7 inches maximum for longest dimension, 200 pixels/inch) do not send more than 5 images
-Images do not have to represent actual artwork that will be shown in the exhibition.
-This CD along with the image script must be received by US postal delivery no later than 5pm FEB 15, 2011. Incompete applications will not be reviewed.
-10.00 dollar application fee which will go towards post card printing of accepted applications.
Notification
The HAC Gallery Selection Committee will notify artists selected for exhibition via email or telephone by March 10.
