Invitation
The Hillsborough Arts Council seeks submissions for a themed exhibition, “Traditional Crafts - Past and Present Perspectives: Quilts, Woodcraft and Basketry,” to be held in the HAC Gallery from October 28, 2011, to January 7, 2012. The show is envisioned to include quilts of varied sizes including standard and smaller-scale quilts. Examples of woodcraft items include furniture, bowls, pens and desk items.
Eligibility
Artists living or who have studios in Orange, Alamance, Chatham, Durham or Wake counties are eligible.
Requirements
-Original works of art, handcrafted by the artist
-Any media
-Work must fit through a 2.5’ x 6’ doorway.
-All works must be of material stable enough to withstand handling and exhibiting, suitably framed and/or prepared for installation.
-Artworks should be for sale and can be restocked periodically, as items are sold, throughout the duration of the exhibition.
-The HAC will take a 30% commission.
How to Apply
-Application
-This application must be completed and submitted online and materials mailed by US Post. Application is not complete until all materials are received.
-5 digital images on CD (7 inches maximum for longest dimension, 72 pixels/inch)
-Images do not have to represent actual artwork that will be shown in the exhibition.
-This CD along with the image script must be received by US postal delivery no later than 5 pm, Feb. 15, 2011. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
-$10.00 application fee which will go towards postcard printing of accepted applications.
Notification
The HAC Gallery Selection Committee will notify artists selected for exhibition via email or telephone by March 10, 2011.

VCUarts Department of Craft and Material Studies is seeking two qualified applicants for its Fountainhead Fellowship. The fellowship provides an opportunity for the strongest recent national MFA graduates to continue their studio practice in Richmond, Virginia. The recipients will gain valuable teaching experience and participate in a vital, progressive community of artists at Virginia Commonwealth University. The Fountainhead Fellowship is a project of the Department of Craft and Material Studies, in cooperation with Fountainhead Development, and the Windgate Foundation.
Eligibility:
- Artists working predominantly in one or more of the following five media areas (ceramics, glass, fiber, metal or wood) in new and innovative ways, and possessing a strong foundation and understanding of their chosen material are eligible and strongly encouraged to apply.
- All MFA students who have graduated within the last 5 years in the US are invited to apply. VCU students and graduates are not eligible to apply.
The fellowship runs in August 1st - May 31st.
Fellows receive:
- 24 hour access to studio space
- A shared apartment at the New Manchester Flats
- $15,000 annual stipend
- Teaching experience at VCU
- An exhibition at a Richmond venue
- 24 hour access to VCU facilities in your area of focus
Fellowship responsibilities:
- Teach up to two classes per semester in the Department of Craft and Materials Studies. This requires 2-4 days per week for two semesters.
- Present a public lecture

The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program is designed to support selected artists by providing resources, space and equipment to assist in the creation and promotion of their work. In turn, artists provide technical and educational assistance to Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Residencies may be from two weeks to four months in duration.
Studios and equipment are available to facilitate work in papermaking, printing and bookbinding.
Participation in the program is based on the artistic merit of proposed projects as well as the degree to which artists further MCBA's artistic vision: to preserve the traditional crafts of fine printing, bookbinding and papermaking; champion book art as a vital contemporary art form; and demonstrate the critical role artists' books play in the advancement of cultural and visual literacy.
The Selection Process
Applications and supporting materials will be reviewed by MCBA's Artistic Director, Executive Director and two panelists from the book arts community. Criteria outlined below will direct the discussion. In the event that no viable candidates emerge, no residencies will be offered in the period.
Since MCBA operates under an open studio model, the Artist-in-Residence is expected to greet the public and give informal information sessions.
The Artist-in-Residence should show a willingness to conduct demonstrations and/or participate in MCBA programming such as family programs, custom tours, youth programs, etc.

Residency periods and deadlines are as follows, on a rolling basis:
Residency Period December 1 to March 31

The Shop at The Living Arts and Science Center features handmade items by Kentucky artists and craftspeople. Items of interest include note cards, small framed or unframed prints/ paintings/ drawings, small crafts, toys, magnets, books, bags/purses, scarves, ornaments, and household items. Wholesale purchases will be made of selected items priced under $15.00 per item (wholesale). Items over $15.00 per item (wholesale) will be carried on consignment. The LASC retains a 30% commission on consigned items.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, and currently reside in Kentucky. All work must be original handmade products that retail at $50 and under.

About The Shop
The Shop at The Living Arts and Science Center features handmade items by Kentucky artists and craftspeople. Items of interest include note cards, small framed or unframed prints/ paintings/ drawings, small crafts, toys, magnets, books, bags/purses, scarves, ornaments, and household items. Wholesale purchases will be made of selected items priced under $15.00 per item (wholesale). Items over $15.00 per item (wholesale) will be carried on consignment. The LASC retains a 30% commission on consigned items.
Eligibility and Guidelines
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, and currently reside in Kentucky. All work must be original handmade products that retail at $50 and under.
Entry Deadline
Work will be reviewed on or after the 25th of each month.

A New Year Means a New Update
Hello Friends:
Well, it's time to get back to work. We have A LOT of new opportunities to share with you. Postings were originally scheduled to begin on January 15th but we've decided to move it up a day or two since we have so much to add.
You may have noticed that the gift calendar was not posted on January 1st as we'd announced. No worries, we just have to fix some errors and make a few revisions before we can release it.
We appreciate your readership.
