Utah Artists Council: Established Artist Grants

Deadline: January 4, 2008 (POSTMARK)

Utah Arts Council
Established Artist Grant

Only Visual Artists are eligible to apply for 2008.

THE UTAH ARTIST ENDOWMENT
A challenge grant awarded to the Utah Arts Council (UAC) from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1991 founded the Individual Artist Endowment and the Ethnic Arts Endowment. Interest generated by these endowments is designated for project grants awarded to both established and emerging artists of Utah, as determined by peer review. Tax-deductible contributions to the endowment continue to support Utah’s artists in perpetuity. Because rates yield a different amount of interest each year, the grant amounts may vary slightly from year to year.

PURPOSE OF GRANT
The Utah Arts Council wishes to support the creative work of individual artists. This
grant is meant to encourage artists to pursue new goals marked by inventive and
innovative work. By facilitating the professional and creative goals of individual artists, the UAC cultivates a community in which the artistic voice contributes to both the quality of life and a creative economy.

GUIDELINES Established Artist Grant (up to $2000)

Intended for an artist who has practiced art professionally for at least five years and has received remuneration as an artist. An established artist has presented works to the public through exhibitions, performances or publications. These artists are often represented by an art dealer, publisher, agent or similar representative.

This larger grant is meant mostly to aid the established artist financially, as well as provide formal recognition, additional credentials, and an opportunity to showcase his/her work.

ELIGIBILITY
You are eligible to apply for a Project Grant if:

• You are a professional artist who is not currently enrolled in a certificate or
degree-seeking program.
• You have lived in Utah for at least one year prior to the application deadline.
(Evidence of U.S. and state residency may be required).
• You are 20 years of age or older.

LIMITATIONS
• Proposals eligible for funding under other UAC programs.
• Activities not directly related to the enhancement of an artist's career.
• Activities involving any organization employing the applicant.
• Any costs incurred prior to the official start date of the grant period.

COLLABORATIONS
Collaborative proposals between two or more artists contributing equally are also
eligible for support. Applications must indicate the creative contribution of each
collaborator. The application must be made in the name of one artist only, with the
names of other participants listed in the project description. Support materials (resumes, statements) must be submitted for each collaborator also labeled with the names of all artists involved. Collaborative applications should be delivered or mailed jointly. If collaborative applications are awarded a grant, the applicant artist assumes responsibility for distributing the total award and submitting the final report.

An artist, who is normally recognized as part of a group, may apply individually,
provided all artistic documentation is easily identifiable as solely his/her own.

Questions, please email artistgrant@utah.gov or call Katie Woslager at (801) 236-7549

The latest book reviews, exhibitions and comprehensive listings feature in every issue. The magazine provides a wide-ranging, unbiased and critical overview of the textile world.

The Selvedge readership is composed of all those who claim textiles as their first love, not simply makers and academics. They include professional artists, textile students, collectors, fashion and interior designers, museum curators and gallery owners. Selvedge is also aimed at an audience beyond those with an established interest in textiles. Discerning consumers are amongst our readers. Intelligent and curious they use Selvedge to learn about the history, techniques, artists and designers that made the items that furnish their lives.

We aim to provide a publication which reflects the creative lifestyle and tastes of this group without isolating or restricting readers. The magazine serves as a link to many other areas of interest, inspiration and knowledge.

Commissioning (truncated--visit website for complete details)

Decisions relating to commissioning are based primarily on the quality of the images submitted. Selvedge is an image-led magazine and no writing however good can justify inclusion unless accompanied by extremely high quality images.

When submitting a proposal please send slides or digital files (300dpi jpeg or tiff files) that illustrate the subject, along with a 1-page outline and a prose synopsis of the article. Please do not send original slides or transparencies with speculative proposals as materials will not be returned. If the proposal is of interest, the editor will contact you to arrange specifics such as word length, angle and to schedule the article's appearance. Selvedge does not provide payment for unsolicited articles but is happy to publish new material that may be of interest to our readers.

Articles are accepted by Selvedge on the basis of First British Serial Rights. The author warrants that the same or similar material has not been sent to another publication.

Selvedge pays a discretionary honorarium for commissioned articles at a rate of £10 per 100 words printed unless otherwise stated. This should be settled with the Editor before publication. Selvedge does not pay a drop fee and acceptance of an article is not a guarantee of publication. Payment will be provided on publication for the printed word count.

No payment of any kind will be provided for articles that promote or publicise a book, product or a public event in which the author has been involved or has a commercial interest. Selvedge does not commission photography or pay photographers expenses. We are happy to review existing stories and buy images at a standard rate of £100 per page.

Feature Articles

Feature articles in Selvedge reflect the diversity of the field. The magazine welcomes challenging, informed and well written articles that have a genuine link to textiles. Very general themes should be avoided. Profile pieces on individuals, groups and companies are acceptable but must be written independently. Travel pieces should be discussed with the editor before undertaking a journey and arrangements made regarding photography and style. Selvedge is not an academic journal and material should be presented with an informal but intelligent tone. The maximum word count for any article is 2,500.

One-page short articles, news items and column ideas are welcome. The maximum length of these pieces is 350 words.

All written material must be accompanied publication quality images, a 35 mm slide or 300 dpi tiff.
