FRINGE FURNITURE 2007
FRINGE FURNITURE 2007
27 September to 15 October
Launch will be at the Melbourne Museum on the evening of Thursday 27
September, between 6pm and 9pm.
THEME
The 2007 theme seeks to inspire the creation and artistic development of contemporary Furniture, Lighting and Furnishings! That’s right, Fringe Furniture is broadening its scope in a material world.
Ideas for exhibits should ideally be drawn from the variety of example ideas below. Awards this year will focus on the best in show, best work addressing the theme, best use of sustainable materials and a few other categories yet to be devised…so think and materialise!
To help get your ideas flowing consider our take on what the theme Material\ism can be:
· Preoccupation with or emphasis on material objects, comforts, and considerations, with a disinterest in or rejection of spiritual, intellectual, or cultural values
· The philosophical theory that regards matter and its motions as constituting the universe, and all phenomena, including those of mind, as due to material agencies
· The substance or substances of which a thing is made or composed
· Anything that serves as crude or raw matter to be used or developed
· Any constituent element
· A textile fabric
· A group of ideas, facts, data, etc., that may provide the basis for or be incorporated into some integrated work
· Materials, the articles or apparatus needed to make or do something
· Formed or consisting of matter; physical; corporeal: the material world
SALE OF WORK
Melbourne Fringe takes no sales commission, and the buyer will have to contact you directly, via the catalogue. Melbourne Fringe and Melbourne Museum will identify sold works with a red dot after advisement by the artist to the Fringe Furniture Producer.

For the applicants from overseas:
The theme of the competition this year is: Jewellery. We have taken up Jewellery as the theme six times since the competition started. With every competition held, the number of the applicants and their works of art has steadily increased and there has been a wider variety of the nationalities of the applicants, which has made us feel appreciative and proud; it seems that this tendency indicates our exhibition has been becoming known. Jewellery must focus on its wearer. Indeed jewellery design changes explicitly and implicitly with the times, but people love jewellery in any time and at any place and jewellery makes its wearers feel happy. In other words, the choice of jewellery is affected by the situation in which the wearers find themselves - even by the cultural backgrounds or by their physical and emotional conditions. We hope all the applicants will turn kind and friendly eyes on people who wear the works. |

Meroogal women’s arts prize 2007
Meroogal Women's Arts Prize 200710th anniversary
The Meroogal Women's Arts Prize is a regional, non-acquisitive competition and exhibition across the fields of visual arts, crafts and design. It is open to a work using any media made by a woman 18 years or over whose principal residence is in the local government areas of Shoalhaven, Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Eurobodalla, Bega Valley, Wingecarribee or Wollondilly.
One entry allowed per person and entry is free.
Theme
Works submitted in 2007 shall respond creatively to the theme: Origins & identity at Meroogal.
Managed by the Historic Houses Trust (HHT), Meroogal is a house in Nowra with a rich collection of artefacts that offers a unique insight into the everyday life of four generations of women whose forebears emigrated from Scotland and settled in the Shoalhaven in the early 19th century.
This year's theme has been specially chosen to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Meroogal Women's Arts Prize by focusing on the shared experiences of all women in shaping identity, and on the values and traits they have inherited and passed along to their own families. Women artists are invited to explore Meroogal and its history and then creatively respond to the theme.
Diverse and original uses of media have become a signature of this annual exhibition, which encourages the practice of traditional women's arts and crafts in a contemporary context.
Conditions of entry
The entrant must be a woman, 18 years or over on the first day of the exhibition, ie 31 August 2007.
The entrant's principal residence must be in one of the eight local government areas listed.
One entry allowed per person and entry is free.
The work entered must have been completed in the 12 months before 31 August 2007.
The work must respond to the theme and an artist statement must be submitted with the entry form or with the work.
Either a digital image of the work shall be emailed to joannag@hht.net.au or two printed photos shall be attached to the entry form or the work.
Work must respond to the theme: Origins & identity at Meroogal.
Size and media restrictions
The competition is open to a work in any medium and all forms and styles are acceptable. Any materials can be used with the exception of anything sharp, dangerous, wet or perishable.
Meroogal's Curator and Manager reserve the right to decline to exhibit any work which, because of its construction (eg, bulk, weight, delicate or dangerous nature) cannot be exhibited safely.
Smaller works are encouraged so the majority of entries can be exhibited in Nowra. Very large works may not be displayed in full due to lack of space.
Works must be clearly labelled with the artist's name, contact details and title of work.
A selection of works will tour to other venues. Having first considered their artistic merit, works that can be readily and safely transported are more likely to be selected.
2D works
Size:
The surface area of the work (it can be any shape) including the frame must not be larger than 1.5 square metres in total in a fixed plane (eg, in a frame or stretcher), or must fold down to 1.5 square metres (eg, fabric or paper).3D works

ART-MAKING IDEAS & WORKSHOP
A special art-making and ideas workshop for intending entrants will be held at Meroogal on Saturday 5 May, running from 9.30am till 3.30pm. The Bundanon Trust Artist in Residence program
Download guidelines and application form (Adobe pdf format)
PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Bundanon Trust Artist in Residence program is open to professional artists and groups, from all disciplines. The program supports artists' new work, research and collaborations. Australian and international artists are hosted in purpose-built studios located at the bundanon properties on the Shoalhaven River in NSW.
As a gift to the Australian people, Arthur Boyd's vision for Bundanon was to provide an inspirational haven for artists of every discipline and at all stages in their careers. Studio space and accommodation is available for up to six weeks.
Eligibility
The Bundanon Artist in Residence Program is open to professional individual artists and groups by invitation or application. Bundanon supports professional artists' practice, across all disciplines and at all stages in their career. Bundanon advances contemporary art practice through fostering artists, producers/directors, as well as curators and educators engaged in research and development.
Residencies under this program do not necessarily involve production based outcomes. However, potential to engage with the arts community/audience regionally, nationally or internationally is desirable.
We encourage:
-
Artists practising in the visual and performing arts, craft and design, digital and technological arts, writers, filmmakers, musicians and sound designers.
-
Collaborative and/or multidisciplinary projects.
-
Groups applying for workshop residencies.
-
Collegiate networks and cultural discourse between critical thinkers, curators and educators. Bundanon supports symposia, masterclasses and conferences.
-
Mentored artist residencies through partnerships with galleries, arts organisations and educational institutions.
-
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and performers.
Residents are located at one of our two sites:
Bundanon (Artist In Residence complex)
Riversdale (The Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre)
The Bundanon Artist in Residence complex, designed by Sydney architects Tonkin Zulaikha, was opened by Arthur Boyd in 1998. Operating 52 weeks a year, the site hosts between 65 – 80 artists in residence during a single year. It offers studio space and accommodation for up to nine individuals in single or shared accommodation in six residences.
They consist of:
- Alec and Helene Gonski Studio
- Hymie Sherman Studio
- Fern Studio
- Sylvia Freedman Studio
- The Writers Cottage
- The Managers Cottage is designated for musicians. It will also support residencies of artists with children.
These facilities have all been recently renovated and refurbished.
The Oscar and Mary Ramsay Study Centre, a useful resource for research, is also located at the Bundanon site.
At Riversdale, the celebrated Glenn Murcutt designed Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre can also be utilised by the Artist in Residence program for group residencies. It comprises 16 twin rooms (or 8 rooms of 4) to accommodate a maximum of 32 people in shared facilities. For more information on group residencies utilising Riversdale contact the Program Officer (02) 4422 2103 before applying.

Greater Pittsburgh Artist Opportunity Grants
Multiple Deadlines: July 1, 2007 and October 1, 2007
Grants - Greater Pittsburgh Artist Opportunity Grants
Guidelines and Application Form are available for download.
An opportunity may be one of many things - An invitation to exhibit at a prestigious gallery, to audition for a major dance company, to study with a mentor or renowned teacher. It might be juried in some way or available only through a competitive selection process. In any case, it should not duplicate experiences the artist has had in the course of his or her ongoing work, and it must lead to professional growth in the artist's career in a clear and meaningful way.
Artist Opportunity Grants can cover expenses directly related to a unique professional opportunity. Opportunities must take place no sooner than one month after the deadline and must be completed within six months. The following are examples of eligible expenses:
- Travel associated with an imminent, concrete opportunity to perform, exhibit or audition, or for a unique opportunity to study with a significant mentor. (Lowest available fares or IRS mileage rate of 40.5¢ per mile)
- Expenses for materials or for equipment rental needed to complete work for an exhibition, performance, publication, etc. in which the artist has been invited to participate
- Documentation of work that is part of an imminent, concrete opportunity
- Professional fees and services related to a specific opportunity
- Expenses related to child- or daycare that would allow an artist to take advantage of a specific opportunity
- Reasonably-priced accommodations if opportunity is more than 100 miles from home
Funding Criteria:
Unlike grant programs that support the creation of new work, this program does not ask panelists to critique the artists' previous work. Instead, reviewers must determine from the application:
- Whether the opportunity is unique, and not a repetition of the artist's similar, previous experiences
- Whether the artist has made the case that this opportunity has true potential to positively impact his or her career
