Greater Good: A Call for Site Specific Installation Proposals
Deadline: Monday, February 12th at 4:00pm.
Greater Good
A Call for Site Specific Installation Proposals
Committee: Young Yoon, Scott Stewart, Erin Gallagher
SITE AND ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP is a forum for the experimental blending of architecture, industrial design, and fine art. The workshop specializes in hand-crafted work influenced by spatial development, understanding of materials, and conceptuality.
SITE AND ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP will be hosting an exhibition located in a one story industrial building in Center City Philadelphia. The space was originally developed in 1917 for commercial printing company. The building and surrounding blocks may soon be demolished to make way for the expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The exhibition will be a gesture/event exploring the meaning of “greater good”. The term “greater good” is a generalization that infers a relationship of sacrificing by an individual and to benefit a group. One may, knowingly or unknowingly, voluntarily or under force, surrender personally for the good of the community, or segment of the community.
This opportunity is open to all creative disciplines and all media. Each participant will transform an individual space (width: 4’ x length: 11’ x height: 9’; effectively dissecting the building into slices) into a relevant installation. Each space will consist of steel stud framing 16” on center (no wall surface will be provided). The central core of the building will be divided similarly among the selected participants. Neighboring installations will run the length of the gallery with each piece analyzing the question at hand. Proposals should take into account the physical space. Be aware of the floor space and allow for viewers to walk through the space and around and/or through your work.
SITE AND ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP will be accepting proposals until Monday, February 12th at 4:00pm. Please send or hand deliver all proposals, three examples of artwork / architecture / design (do not send originals), and a resume to the address above. On all submissions must include a phone number and email address where you can be reached during the week of February 12th (the committee may require clarification regarding certain proposals). Selections will be made by February 19th.
The gallery space will be available to begin the installation process on March 19th and the “Greater Good” will open on March 23rd at 6:00pm. Awards will be announced March 30th. There will be two $250 Merit Awards and one $1,250 Excellence Award.
The exhibition will be held at:
105 North Watts Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
Think about the content of your installation. Will this dialogue about the greater good be a celebration of renewal, a shrine to displacement, or an effigy of condemnation?
