The American Craft Council Announces New Emerging Voices Award, Recognizing the Next Generation of Makers and Scholars Minneapolis, MN – October 2013 –


The American Craft Council announces the establishment of the Emerging Voices Award in recognition and support of the next generation of makers and thinkers in the field of contemporary craft, decorative arts, and design. The inaugural ACC Emerging Voices Award, to be presented in the spring of 2015, recognizes one winner among
five shortlisted emerging artists and an emerging scholar, critic, or contributor to the field for their body of published or unpublished work across all media. The ACC Emerging Voices Award is made possible by the generous support of the John & Robyn Horn Foundation.

Prize remuneration includes $10,000 for the Emerging Artist winner and the Emerging Scholar winner. Additionally $1,000 will be awarded to each shortlisted emerging artist. All Emerging Voices Awardees will be featured in a catalog/journal published by the American Craft Council. It will include biographical information, reproductions of work to date of Emerging Artists, selected work by Emerging Scholar, and a contextual essay on the relationship of awardees to the current state of the contemporary craft field.

Nominations for the Emerging Voices Award will be solicited by ACC from an anonymous body of artists, scholars, educators, critics, curators, and collectors. Self-nomination will also be accepted at any time. Evaluation material provided by nominated individuals will be reviewed by and winning artist and scholar for approval by the American Craft Council board of trustees.

To be considered for the Emerging Artist Award, individuals must meet or have completed within the last five years at least one of the following criteria: be currently enrolled in an academic MFA program, be a current resident of an established residency program, be apprenticed to a working artist/studio, or have established a working studio and participated in at least one juried or curated exhibition, show, or sale.

To be considered for the Emerging Scholar Award, individuals must have a demonstrated body of scholarship, commentary, or criticism on the field of contemporary craft. Published and unpublished work will be considered, including but not limited to monographs, contributions, essays, reviews, conference papers, blog posts, and other new media. Preference may be given to work that uses or cites the American Craft Council’s materials, library, and archives.

The American Craft Council announces the establishment of the Rare Craft Fellowship Award in association with The Balvenie in recognition and support of contributions to the maintenance and revival of traditional or rare crafts in America. The inaugural Rare Craft Fellowship Award, to be presented in the winter of 2014, recognizes one winner among five finalists in the field of traditional crafts. The Rare Craft Fellowship Award is presented in partnership with The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Prize remuneration includes $10,000 for the fellowship winner and $5,000 for each finalist. Finalists will be featured at an awards luncheon in New York City. In addition, the winner of the fellowship will receive a two-week residency in Scotland at The Balvenie’s distillery.

Nominations for the fellowship will be solicited by ACC from an anonymous body of artists, scholars, educators, critics, curators, and collectors. Self-nomination will also be accepted at any time. Evaluation material provided by nominated individuals will be reviewed by the award committee, who will select the finalists and fellowship winner. The Award Committee for 2014 includes ACC director of education Perry A. Price, malt master David Stewart of The Balvenie, independent curator Jennifer Scanlan, and Nicholas Bell, the Fleur and Charles Bresler curator of American craft and decorative art.

To be considered for the American Craft Council Rare Craft Fellowship Award in association with The Balvenie, individuals must demonstrate a contribution to the maintenance or revival of traditional or rare craft techniques, processes, or products and meet at least one of the following criteria: maintain a current working studio or production shop, maintain a program of apprenticeship or mentorship in the preservation of technique, process, or product, have previously been recognized as part of The Balvenie Rare Craft Roadshow, or have previously participated in an American Craft Council show, been featured in American Craft magazine, or
contributed to the educational mission of the ACC.

Guilford Art Center announces a call to artists to submit their work for consideration to the The Shop at Guilford Art Center, which features a lively selection of handmade fine craft and art by American artists. Submissions of work in all media are welcome.


Eligibility

Crafts made (by hand) by an individual and/or with help from a limited number of assistants/apprentices including the following media: baskets, clay, clothing, edibles, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper/book arts, polymer clay, quilts, toys, and wood. Prints, photography and paintings are also eligible. However, space is limited.

All work must be handmade in the USA or Canada, and be of high quality.

All submitted work must express the personal aesthetic of the maker, demonstrate technical skill (attention to detail, design, function and finish) and appear saleable with attention to pricing and product presentation. Structural integrity must match the intent of use.

If your work requires enhancements and/or purchased parts they must be of high quality and not dominate the work (i.e. lamp parts, bamboo handles, clockworks, beads, pouches, etc).

Merchandise must be available upon request and assured it is received in a timely manner when requested.


Jury Fee: $25

This includes submission and review of a minimum of 5 photos or more (digital or not), a CD disk with your work, or e-mail photos to asoos@guilfordartcenter.org, or send to: Anita Soos, Shop Administrator, PO Box 589, Guilford, CT 06437.

The Center has the option of choosing the merchandise that we deem appropriate. Artists assume shipping costs for delivery to the Center.


Crafts are accepted on a 50/50-consignment basis or 100% of the wholesale cost. Any merchandise that is not sold will be sent back to the artist at the artist’s expense unless an agreement has been worked out prior.

Maude Kerns Art Center is currently accepting submissions for its 2015-2016 Exhibit Schedule. Regional, national, and international artists (individuals and groups) working in 2- and 3- dimensional mediums, as well as installation art, are invited to submit their work for consideration. Solo, group, and/or themed shows will be curated based on the content, quality, and number of submissions.

ART CENTER & GALLERY:
Maude Kerns Art Center has over 60 years of experience in the art world. The Art Center is a non-profit community center for the visual arts dedicated to serving the public through major exhibitions, art classes, lectures, workshops, outreach programs, and intimate performances. The Center offers classes, open studios, workshops, and lectures.

ENTRIES:
Images of up to (10) works of art may be submitted for consideration. Submissions will be made from digital images on CD (jpg format–300 dpi resolution). Additional close-up photos of the artwork are allowed and do not need to be listed separately on the application form, but should be noted in the title of the image. The CD must be marked clearly and legibly with the artist’s name, and individual images should be labeled with the title of the work. CDs will not be returned.

GROUP SUBMISSIONS:
Group submissions should include digital images of 5 pieces from each participating artist. For groups of two artists, each artist should submit images of 7 pieces. Each artist will also provide an individual resume and a completed application form. A statement describing the overall theme or concept of the exhibit should also be submitted. For ease of communication, one artist must be designated the “coordinator” of the exhibit.

ARTWORK REQUIREMENTS ENTRIES

MATERIAL
Innovative use of material is encouraged. Work may be created in any media, inclusive of, but not limited to, metal, wood, glass, plastic, duct tape, paper, fiber, polymer, recycled material, stone, rubber, natural material, electronics, and more.

AUTHORSHIP
All works eligible for consideration must be original and of independent or collaborative effort. Artists must be 18 years or older.

DATE OF WORK
Entries must have been made within the past 5 years, and not been previously shown at The Dairy Barn Arts Center.

SUBMISSIONS
Each artist may submit 3 pieces with up to 3 details/views per piece.

Submission of a work of art to this competition and the artist’s completion of the entry form shall be understood to constitute an agreement on the part of the artist to all the conditions set forth. This will also grant The Dairy Barn Arts Center the rights to reproduce and distribute the images through print and electronic media for promotion of the exhibition and entrants. Artists will retain all copyrights to their work.

ENTRY IMAGES
Three (3) pieces will be accepted with up to 3 images per entry. Images should be in focus, clean and clear. The work should appear as you would wish it to be reproduced. Images must be of completed work, NOT WORK IN PROGRESS.

Should artists wish to show the functionality of a work, a demonstrative video will be accepted in place of one image.

ENTRY FEE
Nonrefundable entry fee of $40.00 is required for up to three entries total

Up to ten spaces are available as part of the E.M.E.R.G.E. incubator program within each of the Pennsylvania Guild’s existing craft shows. A unified row of booths will highlight the style and innovation of the newest handmade movement. It’s a great opportunity for young (and new) makers and designers to meet the Guild’s craft-loving, affluent customer base.

Applying through this program provides upgraded amenities at our indoor shows and a reduced booth rate at our outdoor shows – both in manageable space with centralized exposure. Acceptance into the show includes enrollment in a mini-mentor program.

$10 application fee.

Entry into our shows is very competitive as applications arrive from artisans who focus on excellence in craftsmanship, resolved design and unique style or voice. Unlike some shows, we will not add booths to meet a quota.

We offer affordable prices for the professional craftsman.

Eligibility:

Submissions representing the finest quality craftsmanship are welcome. Application is open to artists and craftsmen nationwide. Membership in the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen is required (you may apply for membership with the show application). Juried status is encouraged yet not required.

Standards for displayed works:

All items displayed must be the work of the crafts-person of record and must conform to PGC Standards: excellence in craftsmanship, resolved design and a unique voice or style. Our shows feature original materials by fine professionals, and therefore, assemblages, embellishments, commercial products, or work made from commercially available kits are not eligible. Consumables such as, but not limited to: vinegars, soaps, lotions, perfumes and candles are not eligible. Prints may comprise up to 20% of the display, and must be limited edition. Photography must also be limited edition. No “seconds” or “sale” signs permitted. All shows are floor juried. Work displayed must be representative of your submitted application or you will be asked to remove it. Failure to comply with stated rules or a misrepresentation of work may result in expulsion from the show.

Jewelry as Adjunct: For those who have a primary craft (i.e. pottery) and also wish to display same category jewelry. Four additional images required. You may only display work that is accepted. It is possible that your primary craft may be accepted while your jewelry is not.

Guilford Art Center invites artists to apply for participation in Craft Expo 2014. Works must be handmade in the USA or Canada by an individual and/or with help from a limited number of assistants/apprentices. Artist work is juried from digital images, and must be of high quality, be well-designed, and convey artistic originality and vision. Event benefits Guilford Art Center’s educational programs.

Craft Expo 2014, held on the scenic and historic Guilford Green, is a high-quality, outdoor juried show featuring contemporary crafts from 180 artists, in a variety of media including glass, clay, leather, jewelry, fiber arts, wood, paper, and metal. The show, which has a long history at this location, will be celebrating its 57th year in 2014. It offers a choice of booths: exhibitors may be situated inside a large tent, or outdoors in their own, smaller free-standing tents.

NordArt 2014 International Exhibition

Kunstwerk Carlshütte is a non-profit cultural initiative and organises the NordArt, an annual international exhibition of visual arts from June to the beginning of October. NordArt is one of the largest juried exhibition of contemporary art in Europe, representing all facets of visual arts. Against the striking backdrop of the former foundry Carlshütte, Chief curator and artist Wolfgang Gramm creates an all-encompassing piece of art each year, composed of works by some 250 selected artists from all over the world. 2458 artists from 93 countries have applied for NordArt 2013.

Exhibition area:
The old foundry building in the Carlshütte (22,000 sqm), ACO Wagenremise (400 sqm), a 80,000 square metre sculpture park, as well as public spaces in the town. For an impression of the exhibition site visit the virtual tour.

The deadline for applications is 15 December 2013
The application for participation in the NordArt is preferably online.

NordArt-Prize
:
The NordArt-Prize worth 10.000 Euro is being sponsored by Hans-Julius and Johanna Ahlmann (ACO Group) since 2010. Each year one artist is awarded with the aim to support the art and culture scene.

Public Choice Award:
The visitors of the NordArt can vote for their favourite artist. Each award is worth 1.000 Euro. The three winners are invited to participate again in next years NordArt.

NordArt-Symposium:
Each year the exhibition is preceded by the international NordArt Symposium, bringing together different generations of artists to share experiences and make art – all reflecting the ethos of NordArt itself.

Approximately 10 artists are invited to attend the symposium and create large works (sculpture, installation, painting) for the NordArt.

The participants of the symposium are provided with materials (by agreement), a workplace, accommodation, food and travel cost support.

The work created remains the property of the artist and will be exhibited at NordArt for at least 2 years.

If you wish to attend the symposium, please mark the "Symposium" box in the application form. For this application we require a project description with details on the materials and dimensions, estimated time required, photos with examples of works.

With diet as a way of life for many in our culture, we’ve been taught that one should Eat to Live. We've forgotten that from the 18th through the early 20th century, being fat was a sign of health, prosperity, and an attraction at a time when food was scarce and many went hungry. Hunger, in all its metaphorical forms, is part of our personal and public conversation. Many of us struggle with HUNGER, and yearn for the pleasure of food, love, possessions, control, sex or POWER.

If your work deals with HUNGER, choose five of your best shots. Twenty-four works will be selected for an on-line crafthaus.com exhibition curated by Alice Simpson; to broaden the conversation to include other artists’ voices and visions on the subject of HUNGER.

Work in ALL MEDIA is encouraged. Twenty-four selected work will be highlighted for one month on-line at crafthaus.com, and then become part of Past Online Exhibits.

Curator’s selections will be made based on the relationship of the work to the theme of HUNGER.

This is an OPEN CALL. Submit early. Submit more than one. Not just for artists. Calling poets, writers, designers.


Single-Sheet Book Show

Our preferred size and format is intended to create a more democratic show to encourage poets, artists, designers, or writers — not just those experienced in book arts.

All books will be handled by gallery visitors. Books should be relatively durable. Keep this in mind if you are considering adding something vulnerable such as a glued attachment.

Do not add endpapers or book boards.

The prospectus models the preferred 8-page format: 11 x 17 folded to 4.25 x 5.5 inches. Your entry should be no larger than this.

Books must be at least 8 pages.

Max sheet size is 11 x 17 inches.

Any derivation from this size is accepted, such as 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 11 square.

Stapling and sewing is permitted but not required.

Digitally-produced work will be accepted.

At Modern Patchwork® we celebrate the modern quilt movement in all its glory.

We are looking for distinctive and unpublished original projects to suit every room of the house.

The following is our “wish list” for the upcoming issue. You are not limited to the following, but we encourage you to submit projects that fall within these guidelines:

· Modern quilts of all shapes and sizes: bed quilts, wall quilts, lap quilts, throws, beach blankets, and mini quilts

· Kitchen & Dining: pot holders, dishtowels, aprons, recipe book covers, quilted seat cushions, place mats, mug rugs, napkins and napkin rings, runners, and coasters

· Items for baby and beyond: stuffed animals, diaper bags, toys, mobiles, play mats, bibs, and baby quilts

· Items to take on the go: key fobs, car accessories, coffee cup covers, wallets, luggage tags, and picnic blankets

· Pet accessories: leash and collar sets, dog and cat toys, and pet jackets and beds

· Tech accessories: camera straps, mouse pads, camera cases, and covers for computers, tablets, and iPads


Feature article submissions

We accept queries for feature articles on timely topics related to sewing, modern quilting design, and textiles. To submit a feature proposal, send a detailed outline of your proposal and any related images, websites, or resources illustrating the topic as well as a few writing samples. The query should give an overview of what you are proposing with enough details and supporting information for us to carefully consider your idea. Feature articles are 1,000 to 1,500 words.

The 30th Germantown Friends School Annual Juried Craft Show will be held February 28th to March 2nd, 2014 at Germantown Friends School in historic northwest Philadelphia. This jewel of a show has in the past been ranked as one of the top 50 shows nationwide by Sunshine Artist magazine and among the top ten percent of the nation's shows by ArtFair SourceBook.

This year's show will be comprised of 74 booths and will again include the category Emerging Local Artists. To qualify as an Emerging Local Artist, a craft artist must have practiced his/her craft for no more than eight years, must be new to the GFS Show, and must reside or have a studio within the Philadelphia city limits.

Artists may apply in more than one category, but each application must be accompanied by an application fee and a complete set of images.

Application fee: $25

To apply please submit four images; three of the work you intend to exhibit and one booth image.

Once accepted to the show, the participation fee is $550 for a 10' x 10' booth, with a limited number of corner booths available for $750. The booth fee for the Emerging Local Artists will be $275. The nonrefundable booth fee is to be paid ONLY upon acceptance to the show. The jury will select 74 artists on November 17th and artists will be notified of their status on November 25th.

Housing for artists is available with host families on a first come first served basis for the evenings of Friday February 28th and Saturday March 1st. Our generous parent-volunteers also staff an artist hospitality suite and assist with Friday's move-in.

Each year, the Rome Prize is awarded to about thirty emerging artists and scholars who represent the highest standard of excellence and who are in the early or middle stages of their working lives. The deadline for the nation-wide Rome Prize competition is November 1, 2013.

Fellows are chosen from the following disciplines:

◾Design
◾Historic Preservation and Conservation
◾Landscape Architecture
◾Literature (awarded only by nomination through the American Academy of Arts and Letters)
◾Music Composition
◾Visual Arts
◾Ancient Studies
◾Medieval Studies

◾Modern Italian Studies

Rome Prize recipients are generally invited to Rome for eleven months (some design fellowships are six months and some pre-doctoral art history fellowships are two years).

The Rome Prize consists of room and board, a stipend and separate work space, and privileged access to Rome.

Rome Prize winners are the core of the Academy's residential community, which also includes Affiliated Fellows, Residents and Visiting Artists and Visiting Scholars.

Eleven-month fellowships generally begin at the Academy in early-September and end at the beginning of August. Winners of six-month fellowships may choose to begin in early-September and end in early-March or begin in early-February and end in early-August.


Eligibility

-Undergraduate students are not eligible for Rome Prize fellowships.
-Previous winners of the Rome Prize are not eligible to re-apply.
-Graduate students in the humanities may apply only for pre-doctoral fellowships only if they are ABD.
-Applicants for all Rome Prize fellowships, except those applying for the National Endowment for the Humanities post-doctoral fellowship, must be United States citizens at the time of the application.
-U.S citizens and those foreign nationals who have lived in the United States for three years immediately proceeding the application deadline may apply for the NEH post-doctoral fellowships.

The deadline for applications is 1 November. Applications will also be accepted between 2 - 15 November for an additional fee (see below for details).

Contributor Guidelines

We try to encourage emerging and existing designers to be true to their own design ideas and styles. If you have original, fresh designs we can help you launch your business. We receive a tremendous amount of feedback from our contributors. After appearing in our publications, they suddenly find their whole year booked with workshops, work orders and sales of existing items. We are proud that we can help designers achieve this, and we want to expand this service to a whole range of textile-related enterprises.

We are seeking contributions and technique articles in the areas of: dye processes; fabric manipulation; hand embellishing; machine embellishing; prints; graphic designs; knit; crochet; felt, as well as ideas and inspirational stories, plus coverage of Australian events (gallery exhibitions, displays, parades etc). The easiest way for a designer or author to "start the process" is to send an initial email outlining their proposal, and include their home landline number so that we can talk to them about their ideas, and also possibly source the materials required (although we usually only do this for past contributors that submit their articles before deadline, and respond in a timely manner to questions or technical issues with their work).

The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance (SEFAA) and the University of Georgia's Fabric Design Department have joined forces to organize, promote, and host a juried student exhibition of trends and creative works in fiber art.

This second biennial exhibition will honor Glen Kaufman, Professor of Art Emeritus, Lamar Dodd School of Art, and a solo exhibition of Kaufman's work will be shown in conjunction with Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends 2014.

ELIGIBILITY: Any undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a fiber/textile program or independently pursuing a study of fibers/textiles in the Southeast (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee) is eligible to apply.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
 Each student may submit up to three works.
 Submitted work must be original in design and must have been completed between January 1, 2012 and June 1, 2014.
 Entries must utilize fiber techniques (interlaced, felted, stitched, dyed, coiled, knotted, printed, spun, woven, etc.) and can be of any material.
 Only individual work will be considered; no group projects will be accepted.
 Students who propose an installation work must be prepared to personally install the work at UGA and to remove it after the exhibition closes.
 Work is limited to a weight of 40 pounds including any mounting hardware and/or armature. No screws or bolts for hanging are allowed.
 Each student must submit the following:
 a completed Entry Form in PDF or Word format.
 a one-page artist statement in PDF or Word format.
 jpeg image files for each work entered: Include a full view with up to three additional detail images for clarification. Digital images must be at least 1500 pixels in both dimensions and may be color corrected to accurately represent the work but not enhanced in any way. Image editing is limited to cropping and adding or modifying a solid background of white, black or gray.

Competition Rules:
  • The lace will remain the property of the maker.
  • the lace must be original and may not have previously been published or submitted in competition.
  • The design must be worked in bobbin or needle lace or a combination of both.
  • More than one piece of lace may be submitted by any person.
  • The total demension of the lace must not exceed 300mm x300mm (12 inches by 12 inches).
  • A group may enter one entry only.
  • If framed no glass is to be used.
  • Participation in the competition gives OIDFA the right to publish the design.
  • The lace will be judged by an impartial jury who will give consideration to the originality, design and workmanship.
  • The judges decision is final.

  • The participant is responsible for ensuring that the lace is well packed during transport.
  • A representative colour photograph of the lace must be included for identification purposes.
  • Name and address of the participant must be clearly indicated on the photograph of the lace. This photograh should also bear the title of the lace, display indications (eg “up”) and should be placed in an envelope and enclosed with the lace.

The Professional Art Quilters Alliance-South (PAQA-South) announces its annual juried exhibition of innovative quilts.

Whimsy
Playful humor, fanciful ideas or adornments, light & carefree notions, quaint or comical qualities; whimsy captures a thoughtful and creative smile, and shares it with the world. We invite you to share your interpretation of whimsy in quiltart form.

Specifications
Innovative and original works only. No kits or quilts made in a workshop with the aid of an instructor.

Quilt must be multi-layered and joined by stitching. Dimension in any one direction must not exceed 60 inches.

Accepted works may be mounted on stretcher bars or other rigid support as long as the supporting structure is hidden behind the quilt (e.g., gallery wrap or canvas mounts).

Please note, in the event this exhibit travels rigid mounted quilts or those with excessive depth may be restricted from traveling.

Only quilts created after December 31, 2011, that have not been previously exhibited in a PAQA-South show, are eligible.

Jurors
Bryan Ellis, a member of the Design faculty at both the University of North Carolina - Greensboro and Wake Forest University Art Departments.

Nancy Cook, an art quilter who’s work is in numerous private and public collections throughout the USA. She has exhibited her work on four continents and across the United States, with over a dozen solo and featured artist exhibitions.

For the past 70 years Burnie has been a paper making town. The papermaking tradition is kept alive by local artists and artisans.

Following the great success of the inaugural 2012 Paper on Skin competition, our aim is to further foster and promote the cultural paper heritage of our town by presenting innovative and wearable paper apparel.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
Betta Milk Burnie Wearable Paper Art Competition is open to artists 18 years of age or older, living in Australia. The work must be in excellent wearable condition.

Selected works will be paraded at the Gala Parade & Award Evening Friday 11 April 2014 at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery.

Burnie Arts Council reserves the right to retain selected works to exhibit at Burnie Regional Art Gallery from 14 April to 25 May 2014.

  • All entries should have been completed in the last 12 months and must be an item of clothing in excellent wearable condition. The theme or style of the garment is the artist’s choice.
  • All entries must consist of at least 80% paper.
  • Please note that accessories such as headwear, jewellery, handbags etc are not necessary, but are allowed as part of the design and as with the garment, must be made from at least 80% paper.
  • Where possible artists are encouraged to provide their own model. The Gallery will assist with local models if required.
  • Completed entry form to be returned by Friday 17 January 2014.
  • Entry fee: $25.00 (non-refundable). Artists may enter more than one work. Each entry must be a separate application with separate entry fee.
  • Completed application forms should be accompanied by a CD, DVD or flash drive containing the following:
    1. Curriculum vitae or biography (maximum two A4 pages)
    2. Artist statement (maximum 500 words)
    3. Up to 3 images of previous related work (e.g; fashion design, sewn garment or textile art pieces, handmade paper work)
    4. Concept design sketch of entry and brief description outlining design concept and materials to be used.
    5. Please submit as separate documents. Hardcopies of the above will not be accepted.
  • NB. WHEN SUBMITTING YOUR FINISHED GARMENT, enclose a label stating your name, title of work where available & type of paper(s) used. Imperative to state garment size for correct model matching.

The Philadelphia Fashion Incubator at Macy’s Center City (PFIMCC) is designed to provide five (5) emerging Philadelphia-based apparel and/or accessories designers with the resources - including workspace, curriculum, and mentoring - to further launch and grow their fashion businesses.

The DIR’s will be provided with office space, a workshop room with sample production space, as well as a shared conference room/showroom space. DIR’s will receive mentoring from Philadelphia-based entrepreneurs and feedback from Macy’s at Center City merchant team along with a number of press and event opportunities.

The Philadelphia Fashion Incubator will support talent that understands the program is a business proposition, not merely a creative opportunity.

The Incubator program will begin March 1, 2014. The Designers-in-Residence (DIR) are expected to complete the full year and are limited to their one-year term in residence. After the year, alumnae are encouraged to stay connected through various programs and events.


Eligibility:

Applicants seeking admission to the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator at Macy’s Center City are required to:
�� Reside in the Philadelphia Region: 8 county area includes Philadelphia, the 4 PA Counties (Montgomery, Chester, Delaware and Bucks) and NJ - Camden, Gloucester, Burlington.
�� Be 21 years of age or older.
�� Provide a minimum of five (5) images of your garments or accessories. Ideally work that best reflects your vision for your brand. If called back for an interview, plan to show at least these samples but preferably more.
�� Either plan to start, or have already started (1+ year), a fashion business in the City of Philadelphia or 8 county area.
�� Submit a non-refundable application fee of $75.00. Applicants who have applied in the past will have an application fee of $30.00.
�� Be able to commit to PFIMCC completely, utilizing all available resources, similar to a full-time job (35-40 hours a week).

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum is accepting submissions from artists in a variety of styles and media for exhibitions in 2015.

The mission of Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens is to serve the community of Ormond Beach and its visitors in offering exhibitions by Florida, regional and international artists; to maintain a permanent collection of Malcolm Fraser’s works; to advance the arts through education and appreciation; and to maintain the Gardens as a botanical and ecological showcase.

Eligibility of Submissions
Exhibition at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum is open to any artist or collaborative of artists submitting original works of art or design created within the past three years. Professionals in ALL disciplines are encouraged to submit. Media: Open to any media including but by no means limited to traditional drawing, glass, printmaking, digital/new media, photography, sculpture, painting, installation, etc.

Submission Format
All entries must be submitted digitally via CD. The 10 images must be saved as JPEGS.

Also include artist statement and resume.

Please note that CDs will not be returned and will become the property of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum.

Limitations
All 2D work must include suitable hanging mechanisms, and either be framed or created on a gallery wrapped canvas. All 3D work must be assembled and ready for exhibition upon arrival. We reserve the right to reject work for the exhibition that differs significantly from the submitted images and/or for craft issues.

The Rosendale Cultural Crossroads Public Art Residency provides an eight week residency grant for artists to create new public art projects for our town, Rosendale, New York. Temporary sculpture, installations or interventions for accessible sites will be considered. Work must be viable for 4 months. This new opportunity is funded by the National endowment for the Arts and is intended to highlight the economic impact artists have in their community.

In addition to designing/creating and implementing new work, the artist must develop opportunities for the public to engage with the work throughout the development and installation of the project. Artists will be matched with a regional artist and business partner to help make connections that will enhance the public engagement aspects of the project.

Rosendale was founded in 1844 to support the cement mining industry. Our mile long Main Street has a river along one side and a steep jumble of rocks, Joppenburgh Mountain, along the other. Bridging the river is a tall rail road trestle that has been made into a rail trail. The rail trail passes directly in front of the WSW studios, which was built in 1886 as the company store for the cement miners. WSW’s studio is midway along the 23 mile trail and the only public access site along the route.

Rosalux Gallery announces a national call for entries for it’s 9th annual Open Door juried group exhibition. Open to all US residents working in any 2D/3D media except video. Only works completed within the past two years are eligible.

Rosalux is a cooperative art gallery that was founded in Minneapolis in 2002. The gallery is home to twenty artists whose work is well known both nationally and internationally, featured in various major collections, and who have individually received numerous prestigious awards and grant recognitions. The gallery is located in the Van Buren Building in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

Open Door is an exciting opportunity for non-member artists to showcase their work in the gallery. Typically the Open Door exhibition is reviewed and receives extensive press coverage.

Rug Hooking magazine is published 5 times per year, and is available in some book and craft stores, and by subscription. Our goal is to provide high quality articles and photographs about the art and craft of rug hooking, and how-to articles on techniques and projects. Rug Hooking readers are passionate about rug hooking, and they value informative articles about the craft and the people involved in the field. They also enjoy the high quality projects that they find in our magazine.

If you are not familiar with RHM and the types of articles we publish, we suggest that you read a few issues to get a sense of the magazine. We ask that any article you submit has not appeared in any other publication. If it has, please let us know where and when it appeared in print.


Submissions

Feature articles: We invite you to submit articles for features. Please send us the complete manuscript with accompanying photographs, diagrams, or other supporting materials. Features vary in length from 1800 words to 3200 words, depending on the topic. Features require three to twelve photographs (or visuals). Departments: RHM has several regular departments, focusing on techniques, projects, and people. Review back issues to decide which department might best accommodate your article, and pay attention to how the article is structured. We invite submissions of project plans for step-by-step and how-to articles. These projects should display expertise in techniques and design, and be of high quality so that other hookers will be enticed to complete them for themselves or for gifts.

Rug Beat is a quarterly online magazine devoted to rug hooking, and is available by subscription for $9.95 per year through the Rug Hooking magazine website. COMPETITION RULES
  1. The theme of the 2014 competition is ‘Ten’.
  2. There is one category only.
  3. Entry is open to all.
  4. Entries can either be based on a traditional or contemporary design that reflects and interprets the theme ‘Ten’.
  5. The entry must have been completed between May 2013 and the deadline.
  6. All entries must be original. If the entrant has drawn inspiration from another artwork such as a photograph that source must be acknowledged in the entry form.
  7. An entrant may apply any techniques including piecing, appliqué, embroidery, whole cloth and/or manipulated fabric, etc. Any materials may be used, but the final result must be flexible in nature and consist of three layers of fabric held together with stitching.
  8. Each entry must measure 125cm (49in) square.
  9. Each entry must have a Velcro hanging strip attached to the top back edge of the quilt (instructions are on the website).
  10. A label with the entrant’s name, address, telephone number and email must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt.
  11. Each entrant may submit up to two quilts.
  12. All entries must be submitted via online entry form on the Australasian Quilt Convention website www.aqc.com.au no later than February 21, 2014

A panel of three judges will then select up to 30 finalists. The judges’ decision is final. Upon seeing the actual quilts, the organisers reserve the right to decide which quilts will be included in the exhibition. The organisers reserve the right to refuse any work that does not match the images submitted to the judges. Any work which requires special hanging conditions, or includes delicate or fragile embellishments or which cannot be easily folded will not be selected.

The 2014 National Juried Show is open to all Canadian citizens and residents, as well as non-resident members of the CQA/ACC. Over $50,000 in prizes offered by the Sponsors.

For an entry to be accepted, the online entry form must be filled in completely, including all the required photographs and documents.

Fees: $25.00 ($75.00 for non-members) plus tax for each entry.

  • Entry is open to all Canadian residents, Canadian citizens, and CQA/ACC individual members. (If you are not a Canadian citizen or resident, you MUST be a CQA/ACC member to enter).
  • Original Design Realistic Pictorial Wall Quilts depict subject matter in an accurate and realistic manner and demonstrate personal expression and originality in design, colour and/or techniques.

  • Artists submitting works from outside of Canada will be responsible for all customs arrangements and transportation costs.

Rules

  1. Request letters to purchase kits are to be postmarked no earlier than Oct. 1, 2013. Members only.
    Non Members may purchase a kit after November 1, 2013.
  2. Kits are limited to 1 per person until January 1, 2014. Then additional kits may be purchased, if they are available. Each kit consists of 5 Trend-Tex Inc. fabrics, cut into fat quarters.
  3. Fabric Use: All 5 of the fabrics in thee kit must be clearly visible on the front of the wallquilt/wearable. You may use 3 additional fabrics of your own choosing. Please Note: To be eligible for the Trend-Tex Award, only the 5 kit fabrics may be used on the front of the wallquilt/wearable (includes binding). Additional fabrics may be included on the back.
  4. Size: Perimeter of the finished piece must not be larger than 120”, no matter what the shape. There is no minimum size restriction.
  5. Design may be original or traditional and any combination of machine and/or hand piecing, applique or quilting is required. Embellishments are at the quilter’s discretion.
  6. Finishing: The wallquilt/wearable must be completely finished, including all aspects of quilting, binding, and needlework/embroidery.
  7. Hanging Sleeve: at least 2” wide, on the back of the wallquilt/wearable. For wearables it can be a temporary sleeve.
  8. Label on the back of the wallquilt/weearable to include: title, artist’s name, date completed and credits. For any techniques that are not your own, please give credit to the sources and obtain written permission if using another person’s design. Please remember to respect copyright.
  9. Deadlines: Wallquilts/wearables are due March 22, 2014 to be eligible for judging and must meet all challenge rules.
  10. All wallquilts/wearables become the property of the CQA/ACC and will be displayed at Quuilt Canada 2014, June 11-14, 2014 in St. Catharines, ON. The majority of wallquilts/wearables will be sold by silent auction ending June 14, 2014.


Prizes are awarded to CQA/ACC members only for:
• 1st, 2nd, 3rd for wallquilt.
• 1st, 2nd, 3rd for quilted wearable
• Trend-Tex Award
• Judges’ Choice Awards may also be given.
• A Viewers’ Choice Award will also be announced at the banquet June 14, 2014.
• The Trend-Tex Award winning wallquilt/wearable will be given, as a gesture of thanks, to Trend-Tex Fabrics Inc. and will not be auctioned.
• The Trend-Tex Award is presented for the best use of fabric, using only the five fabrics in the 2014 Challenge Kit.

Judges will follow the current CQA/ACC Quilting Standards and Guidelines for Competitive Quiltmaking.

Entries will be photographed and may be used in The Canadian Quilter, on the CQA/ACC website or for other promotional purposes.

The Sisters Quilting Collective is seeking African American quilt artists of the African Diaspora for its 3rd annual quilt exhibit, in celebration of Black History Month, February 2014. The exhibit will be held at the historical Brickhouse Art Gallery in Sacramento California. The theme for this year’s exhibit is “Our Stories in Quilts”, “Quilts That Are Inspired by Stories in Our Lives”.

Eligibility: Quilts must be constructed by the person or persons named on the Artist Statement. Quilts previously exhibited at the Brickhouse Gallery are not eligible. Accepted quilts cannot be sold prior to the end of the exhibit. Once quilt is accepted by the selection committee, substitutions are not allowed. The maximum size for quilt entries is 63”x71”.


Entry Fee: A non-refundable $25.00 fee for each accepted quilt submitted. Please do not send fees until after you receive notification of acceptance.


All accepted quilts are expected to remain for the entire exhibit which will begin on Friday, February 1st, 2014 and end Saturday, February 15th, 2014.

Confirmation of accepted quilts will be sent by email or letter within 7 days after the deadline.

About Sisters Quilting Collective

The Sisters Quilting (SQC) had its beginning in 2012 after an exhibition of quilts held at the Brickhouse Art Gallery in Sacramento, California. The Founding members were Jan Hollins, Barbra Lord, Faye Wilson Kennedy, Fredi Slaughter-Walker, Barbara Range and Kephera Alston.

The Sisters Quilting Collective (SQC) was organized to celebrate, preserve and continue the traditions of quilting and fiber arts and to keep quilting and fiber arts alive for future generations. SQC is a membership organization. We welcome individual quilters, textile and fabric artists, doll designers and collectors and the general public who support SQC’s mission. Membership in the SQC is open to any person, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin.

SQC holds an annual quilt and fiber arts exhibit at the Brickhouse Gallery in February during Black History Month. The purpose of the exhibit is to promote, educate and create an interest and awareness in the historical value and contributions which quilters and fiber artists throughout the African Diaspora (di-as-po-ra) have given to the art of quilting and fiber arts.

Calling all rug hookers! We invite you to enter your best hooked piece completed in 2012 or 2013 in Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XXIV. We welcome all styles and sizes, from primitive to fine shading, from traditional to contemporary. The deadline for entries is November 30, 2013.

Entries are impartially and anonymously evaluated by a panel of four qualified judges from the rug hooking community. Rugs are judged on technique, color plan, and interpretation of design. Each rug is judged on a numerical scale on its own merit, independent of all other entries. Finalists will be featured in Celebration XXIV, published in August 2014. Celebration highlights the artistry, fine craftsmanship, and astonishing diversity of hand-hooked rugs produced in the past year. Readers are invited to vote for their favorite pieces, which will be featured as Readers' Choice winners in RHM next summer.

How to Enter

1. Limit of one (1) entry per person.

2. Enter online. Follow the instructions for electronic submissions.

3. Or complete the entry form and follow the instructions on page 11 of the Sept/Oct 2013 issue. Entries must be postmarked by November 30, 2013.

4. If you include an e-mail address with your entry, you will receive an e-mail confirmation when your entry is received. If you do not have e-mail, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for receipt confirmation.

5. The rug must have been completed in 2012 or 2013, regardless of when you started it. You may enter a rug that has been entered in other competitions, and group entries are permissible.

6. Submission of an entry serves as a release that Rug Hooking and its publisher may publish photographs of the rug in the future, with proper credit given to the artist. This may include promotional materials, online or in print, including the Celebration book, in RHM, and on RHM products.


Category Definitions

Note: Some rugs may not fall neatly into one category. Use your judgement to select the category that best represents your rug.
  • Primitive: If your rug is a primitive rug, you may enter it in this category INSTEAD of one of the other three categories. Primitive suggests simplicity in all areas: design, materials, and technique. It usually means wider cut, naive or simple design with little or no shading, exaggerated scale or unrealistic proportion. Think folk art. In a pictorial rug, think Grandma Moses.
  • Commercial: If you purchased the pattern, enter the rug in the commercial category, Even if you adapted the pattern, if the rug is substantially based on a commercial pattern and design, it is a commercial rug.
  • Adaptation: If your rug is inspired by someone else's design in a different medium (for example, a painting, a postcard, a photograph, etc.) it is an adaptation. Be sure to credit the original inspiration and provide written documentation that you have permission to adapt someone else's work in this way. If you submit online, e-mail documentation to cderr@stackpolebooks.com.
  • Original: If your rug is based on your original content and design idea, it is an original design. Carefully consider who owns the copyright; if you hook a design based on a photograph that YOU took, the rug is your original design. If you hook a rug based on a photo that someone else took, that other person owns the copyright, and you should classify your rug as an adaptation.

The British Quilt Study Group has issued a call for papers for their 2014 seminar, Quilting Practices in the 20th Century.

BQSG invites submissions for original, previously unpublished research covering quilt or related textile study around the proposed theme for the 2014 Seminar on aspects of quilting practices in the twentieth century.

Suggested studies might be related to individual practitioners, particular fabric designers or the influence of the machine on twentieth century quilts. However, any interpretations of the title are welcomed.

Papers can be up to 7,000 words in length, and shorter papers between 2,000 and 3,000 words are also welcomed.

Abstracts for presentation at the BQSG seminar in October 2014 should be received by 30 November 2013. Please submit your abstract of approx. 400 words, outlining your area of research and indicating primary and secondary sources. Send your abstract to Ann Gibson, Administrator for the Research Panel at research@bqsg.org.uk by 30 November 2013.

Selected papers would be presented at the BSQG seminar to be held mid October 2014. Papers presented at the annual seminar will also be published in the well respected BSQG journal Quilt Studies.

Fiber in the Present Tense 2014 is a juried exhibition to showcase the fiber art work of the MA/RI Chapter of the Surface Design Association (SDA). The exhibition has an open theme, and all media utilizing surface design, weaving, 2D and 3D structures, quilts, stitching, or any other contemporary art textile techniques, will be considered.
