Artspace: Call for Site-Specific Exterior Projects

Deadline: August 30, 2012 (RECEIVE)

Call for Site-Specific Exterior Projects
Instructions Not Included: Tinker, Hack, Tweak
Artspace

New Haven, CT
November 9, 2012 to January 17, 2013

Artspace is looking for proposals for temporary works to go on the outside of our building from November 2012 to late January 2013 as part of the exhibition Instructions Not Included: Tinker, Hack, Tweak.

This exhibition constructs a visual discussion and exploration of the creative possibilities in readymade culture. Throughout the project artists will offer homemade recipes and shared ideas for the recontextualizing of everyday goods to radical ends. INI creates a forum for discussing industrial design, our daily environment, and the objects we need and with which we surround ourselves. The exhibit explores the crossover between aesthetics, industrial design, “ready-mades”, the instructible and maker movements, craft, guerilla /Graffiti protest work, mass-production, customization, and the DIY movement.

We are interested in having—but are not limited to:
• A yarn-bombing project on the benches, mailbox, or lampposts.
• A light-based work, particularly one with a message (positive and political a plus) about art, creativity, or making
• A sound work for our entryway.
• Unique works to flank—without blocking—our windows and sidewalks, or our two entryways, such as banners, flags, projected works, or other pieces that would be durable enough to resist the elements but would not damage the building façade.
• We are also soliciting suggestions for work to be put up in our large inside office window, facing out onto Orange Street.

All works must be installed and dismantled by the artist. Artspace will assist as possible, but the burden of logistics rests on the individual creator.

Selected artists will receive an honorarium, the amount of which is determined based on the scope of the project.

Artspace specializes in cutting edge contemporary art. We suggest that interested artists familiarize themselves with the venue before applying.

Artspace: Call for Connecticut based Artists

Deadline: August 30, 2012 (RECEIVE)

Call for Connecticut based Artists
Instructions Not Included: Tinker, Hack, Tweak
Artspace

New Haven, CT
November 9, 2012 to January 17, 2013

Artspace is looking for artists/makers to participate in the exhibition Instructions Not Included: Tinker, Hack, Tweak, slated to run from November 2012 to late January 2013. For this call, we are looking for Connecticut based artists whose work explores cross-pollination between sculpture and functional objects/devices. Multi-media artists are encouraged to apply. While we will be exhibiting existing individual works in the gallery, this is a participatory project. We are looking for individuals open to collaborating during the event and who are interested in experimentation and expanding their practice in a fluid, game-like setting.

About the exhibition: (truncated)
Instructions Not Included constructs a visual discussion around the creative possibilities of readymade culture. The exhibition will serve as a forum for reexamining industrial design, our daily environment, and the objects that surround us.

Participation expectations: (truncated)
Artists will be asked to be in residence at least once a week to collaborate with the other INI artists on short term projects and to update their own bulletin boards with any images or texts they find interesting and appropriate to their thought process. Additionally, each artist will be asked to give one demonstration or workshop on the skill of his/her choice.

There will be a modest materials supply for those selected. Additionally, there will be a catalog produced and there will be a strong web-based component offering possibilities for interviews, interactions with the world at large, and other opportunities for learning and exposure.

Artists will be selected based on the quality of the work submitted, suitability to the theme of the exhibition, and in the interest of creating an interesting mix of media/genres within the whole group.

Artspace specializes in cutting edge contemporary art. We suggest that interested artists familiarize themselves with the venue before applying.

We are also announcing Fiber Art Calls for Entry will be on hold until August 5, 2012 so the editors can take much needed VACATIONS. We look forward to returning refreshed and renewed.

As always, we appreciate your readership. We'll be back soon.

High Fiber Under Five

Deadline: August 13, 2012 (ONLINE)

5th annual High Fiber Under Five
Benifit Exhibition and Sale
San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles

San Jose, CA
October 20 - November 4, 2012

High Fiber Under Five 2012 is the 5th annual fiber benefit exhibition and sale—a signature event at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles that runs from October 20, 2012 to November 4, 2012. High Fiber Under Five is designed to generate support for fiber artists and the Museum’s fiber art advocacy efforts by connecting artists around the globe with collectors and by introducing this medium to our community as a whole.

We welcome submissions of all kinds of fiber art—basketry, jewelry, knitting, sculpture, quilts, wearable art, tapestries, and mixed-media pieces in which fiber plays a prominent role. Our goal is to showcase high-quality pieces that will pique the interest of art collectors and attract new collectors.

This year, we’d like to encourage you to submit artworks that we can offer for sale between $100 and $300. You can submit work priced as high as $500, but we have noticed that mid-range priced art sells more frequently than the higher priced items. If works are $100 each, you can submit up to 15. There will be a onetime submission fee of $10. The total retail value of your submissions may not exceed $1,500. If you are submitting works valued at $500, please submit only 3.

All of the accepted work will be hung salon style for the opening VIP reception on October 20, 2012. As items sell, the purchasers will be given the option of taking the pieces home that evening. Remaining work will be on display until it sells or until the last day of the benefit exhibition, November 4, 2012.

FEE: One-time $10 submission fee

ART QUILTS XVII: INTEGRATING A PARADOX

Deadline: August 24, 2012 (EMAIL) or (RECEIVE) or (HAND DELIVERY)

ART QUILTS XVII: INTEGRATING A PARADOX
Chandler Cultural Foundation and
Chandler Arts Commission

Chandler Center for the Arts
Chandler, AZ
November 2, 2012 – January 20, 2013

A Call to Artists for original works of textile Art Quilts that combine apparent opposites in a way that values the unique qualities of both elements. The challenge is to move beyond dualism towards integration, from either/or to both/and. PARADOX: a problem without a simple solution

Juror: Adriene Buffington

Juror’s Exhibition Theme: Integrating a Paradox
Using any of the various techniques and materials of the Art Quilt medium, create a work to express the integration of paradoxical qualities. The paradox you choose may be conceptual, visual, or personal. For example:
• Art often expresses a conceptual paradox: order & chaos, beauty & ugliness, love & hate, hope & grief . . .
• Design elements can be complementary pairs: dark & light, repetition & variation, harmony & discord, hard & soft . . .
• Life is filled with contradictions: control & risk, community & solitude, work & play, strength & weakness . . .

The Art Quilt is itself a paradoxical medium: fractured in pieces & stitched into a whole, contemporary art & traditional craft. . .

A paradox can express the tension between ideas that are contradictory, and yet both are true. Integrating a Paradox is not blending these opposites into some neutral
compromise, but joining them in a way that each element retains its unique character - yet somehow working better together than apart.

ELIGIBILITY
Quilt artists who want to share their art with a broad based arts audience are invited to enter. Two or more people may have collaborated on the pieces. The works must not have been previously displayed at the Chandler Center for the Arts or other downtown Chandler venue. Works should have been completed within the last three years.
Wearable art and works less than 10" wide will not be accepted.

(International artists are invited to submit work).

PRIZES
$250 jury awards will be given to the Best of Show Juror’s award and the Viewer’s Choice award. A purchase award will be offered by the Chandler Arts Commission for
up to $10,000.00.

JURY FEE
There is a non-refundable fee of $15 to enter up to 3 works.
