Stepping into the Future Wearing Woven Slippers!

Hello Readers:

This marks our final post for the year 2010. As expressed in a previous message: we are flabbergasted by the speed in which this year seems to have gone by! I am exceedingly grateful for the dedication of our small FACFE team. We faced some extreme issues (behind the scenes) but everyone worked steadfastly to bring you—our lovely Readers—a broad selection of fiber related opportunities.

It will be fraught with its own challenges but we are hopeful for the coming year. We have many ideas for FACFE tacked to our planning board and we will work diligently to bring most to fruition in 2011.

As of this writing, we are on hiatus until January 15, 2011. However, we’ll pop in on January 1st to present the new calendar.

Have a very happy, healthy and prosperous NEW YEAR. Be safe as you enjoy this holiday season.

With warmest regards,

Elise N. and the FACFE Team

I Wear My Heart On My Tee

Deadline: 12 January 2011 (RECEIVE) Or (EMAIL)

I Wear My Heart On My Tee

Town Hall Gallery
Hawthorn VIC
Australia
2 March to 26 March, 2011

Philosophy of the exhibition:

The humble t-shirt has come a long way from being just a simple undergarment. It now tells people how we feel, what we think and where we stand on issues. Often the t-shirt says more about us than what we speak verbally. Anything is possible on the t-shirt and owning them can be very addictive. For many of us, looking through our collection of t-shirts, we can see ones
that we wear at special times. There are also the t-shirts that are so old and full of holes that we should throw out but because of the memories they hold, we simply can’t. I wear my heart on my tee is a celebration of the t-shirt as an artists canvas and will showcase fun, kooky and inspiring design from Melbourne based artists/designers and fashion labels.

It is envisaged that the gallery will be plastered with hundreds of t-shirts, some shown on the walls, others folded and some on mannequins. The opening night will also see a small parade of t-shirts along with some performances, making it a night to remember.

Things you need to know: (truncated)
 All works to be for sale.
 Town Hall Gallery takes 20% commission on sales.
 Artists included the exhibition can provide up to 30 t-shirts each. These may be of various designs or of a few designs with a size range included (XS,S,M,L,XL)
 We are looking for submissions of t-shirts that would fit male, female and children.
 People will be able to purchase their t-shirts and take them home straight away, so artists will have the opportunity to replenish stock.
 Town Hall Gallery will be responsible for installing the exhibition, you just need to provide the work!
 Anything goes on a t-shirt! There is no theme, just great looking t-shirts!

Museum of New Mexico Foundation
New Mexico Centennial Foundation
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Fall 2011 & continues for 16 Months

New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912, and communities statewide are now preparing a wide range of projects, exhibits and events to commemorate the state's 100th birthday. Led by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, and in partnership with the NM Centennial Foundation, the NM Centennial 1912-2012 is an inclusive statewide commemoration encompassing Centennial-themed events, projects and initiatives.

New Mexico-based artists and artisans are invited to submit proposals for special commemorative pieces for the upcoming statehood Centennial. A wide range of artistic media will be considered, including painting, prints, glassware, jewelry, basketry, pottery, and fiber arts (both wearable and decorative). New Mexico Creates, a program of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, is working in partnership with the NM Centennial Foundation to promote the "New Mexico Creates/Centennial Commemorative Art" line. The sixteen-month commemoration period begins fall 2011.

Works chosen will convey some of the state's centuries-old craftsmanship traditions as well as the ongoing international appeal the state holds for artists and artisans. Items will encompass a myriad of styles from traditional to contemporary and even cutting edge.

The "New Mexico Creates/Centennial Commemorative Art" items will be sold at MNMFShops museum retail outlets in Santa Fe, and via the New Mexico Creates website, newmexicocreates.org. Northfield Arts Guild: "WWW."

Northfield Arts Guild

Northfield, MN
June 29, 2011 to August 6, 2011

Northfield Arts Guild in Northfield, Minnesota, in partnership with the Northfield Public Library and Art on Water Gallery, is hosting a fiber and textile exhibit which brings the work of Upper Midwest fiber and textile artists to Northfield in the summer of 2011. Entitled "WWW.", the exhibit explores via artist interpretations how communications technology has influenced contempory life.

The theme of this exhibit: If art is an interpretation of reality, then how might art examine the profound, life-changing reality of contemporary communications technology? The web has revolutionized not only how we communicate, but how we process time and experience. The conclusions of social scientists on this issue raise now-familiar themes ranging from deeply altered human relations to limitless information which expands human potential.

Diverse interpretations are anticipated and encouraged from participating artists.

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site

Deadline: June 16, 2011, 4:00 p.m. (RECEIVE) or (HAND DELIVERY)

Artists' Proposals
Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site

Philadelphia, PA
2012 Season

Eligibility
1. Collaborative proposals are permitted; individuals may submit only one proposal per year (whether alone or as part of a collaboration).
2. Artists who have previously exhibited at the site must wait five years before submitting a proposal for a new installation.
3. Currently enrolled undergraduate students are ineligible to apply.
4. All proposals must be for a site-specific installation.
5. These guidelines are for artists who wish to install visual, video or other installation work to remain on view during public hours at the historic site. The site does occasionally host live or performing arts. Please contact our Sean Kelley at sk@easternstate.org for proposals in the performing arts.

Orientation

We strongly recommend that artists begin the proposal process by attending an artist orientation. These informal tours/conversations give the artists a chance to experience the space, discuss what makes a successful proposal, ask questions, and observe visitors interacting with the current artist installations.

Orientations are recommended, but not required. There is no charge to attend an orientation.

2011 Orientation Dates and Times (for 2012 Season): AVAILABLE ON WEBSITE

Choosing a Location in the Penitentiary Complex

Artists may apply for any public area in the penitentiary complex for the 2012 season, except Cellblock 2 and the audio tour route. Some installations, such as Linda Brenner’s Ghost Cats have been sited throughout the penitentiary complex. The staff is available to consult on proposed locations.

Funding and Approval (truncated)

The historic site will fund a maximum $7,500.00 per project. This funding indicates approval to exhibit. All projects that are approved will be installed for one full tour season (March 15 through November 30, 2012), unless the proposal states otherwise. Artists may apply for future installation cycles, and should assume that the same guidelines, deadlines, and funding levels will apply.

Exhibition Conditions (truncated)

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is a National Historic Landmark, the highest designation for an historic property under Federal law. It is also a ruin, abandoned in 1971, and stands today as an architectural shell. The building has virtually no running water, little climate control, and limited electrical service. These conditions can be destructive to many types of materials. Most artists working at Eastern State build their work for the space and incorporate the inevitable deterioration into the piece.

Because of Eastern State's historic designation, art installations may not permanently damage or alter the building or artifacts in any way without prior written approval.

Deadline: January 7, 2011 by 5:00 p.m. (EMAIL) or (RECEIVE)

Beyond the Fold
Desotorow Gallery

Savannah, GA
February 4 - 15, 2011

Theme: Paper sculptures have been made since the advent of paper, utilizing techniques from origami to papier-mâché. In the modern day - where there is an oversaturation of paper products, and simultaneously a technological push towards paperless media - artists work to innovate with the paper material and the book form.

Beyond the Fold examines artists who utilize paper in a way that exceeds the utilitarian, two-dimensional expectations of the material.

Eligibility: This juried exhibition is open to national and international artists (professional, emerging, and student).

Media/Genre: Open to works of all genres and media.

A $20 submission fee allows for the submission of up to 3 pieces of work. Artists will receive notification of the list of selected pieces through email on Jan. 14.
