Call for Proposals: Museums of Bat Yam [MoBY]

Deadline: February 1st 2008

Call for Proposals
"Hosting"
Museums of Bat Yam [MoBY]
Israel

MoBY (Museums of Bat Yam, Israel) is currently organizing an international group exhibition revolving around the theme of "Hosting". Through this concept, we wish to investigate the relationship between museum-artist-work of art-viewer. We are inviting art and culture collectives, groups and collaborations to submit proposals for actions/exhibitions to take place in each of the museum's spaces.

The exhibition will open at April 10th 2008 and close on July 10th 2008.

We welcome proposals from various "families", ones that have been working as a group for a while, as well as ones that are formed especially for this exhibition.

The suggestions are not required to address the themes of architecture or urbanism. They should include a detailed outline of the project suggested, as well as an estimated budget, if required.

Writers, critics and curators are also invited to submit proposals for potential publication in the exhibition catalogue.

The exhibition is done in collaboration with the upcoming Bat Yam International Biennale of Landscape Urbanism.

Bead&Button Magazine

Deadline: Open/Ongoing

Bead&Button Magazine
Kalmbach Publishing Co.
Waukesha, WI

Bead&Button is a bimonthly magazine devoted to techniques, projects, and designs of beaded jewelry and accessories. Our beading designers are skilled artisans (not necessarily skilled writers) who are willing to share what they know.

We accept proposals for beaded projects and proposals for articles about artists.

Submission Guidelines (Truncated)

WRITERS are invited to submit proposals for stories about accomplished beadmakers and jewelry artists as well as trends and other information that appeals to our readers. Complete information on how to submit stories can be found in "Bead&Button contributor guidelines for writers" at http://www.beadandbutton.com/

BEAD ARTISTS are invited to submit projects for replication in the magazine. We accept a broad range of original designs published as intermediate to advanced level project articles. Most of our projects involve stitching. Submitted designs and instructions should describe how to make jewelry using specific beading and bead-related techniques. Each piece is remade by a Bead&Button editor and photographed for publication with the editor's remade piece(s). Instructions are edited or rewritten to ensure that the project can be made by the Bead&Button reader. Submissions must be exclusive to Bead&Button.

PROJECT ARTICLES are considered for publication based on original artistic quality and craftsmanship. The acceptance process involves input from several editors who consider the originality and sophistication of the concept, the precision with which the work was created, interesting techniques, desirable color combinations and textures, and the drape, style and flair of each piece. Projects that combine materials and shapes in an innovative way, feature materials that can be easily obtained or substituted, and expose readers to challenging and rewarding beading processes are more likely to be selected. Projects may be published as feature articles or in Chic & Easy, Quick Stitch, Clearly Crystals, Claymaker, Wire Expressions or another section of the magazine.

TO SUBMIT A PROJECT ARTICLE, send a highresolution electronic image or a photograph with a short description of the project. If your proposal is accepted, you will be contacted and asked to send the complete project, instructions and a list of materials with resource information for any hard-to-find items. Upon receipt of the project and instructions, Bead&Button will contact you to discuss when the project is likely to be published, payment and other details.

Additional opportunities

TIPS & TECHNIQUES features short items sent in by readers that help make beading easier, faster, neater, or more fun. Send your tip with a photo, rough drawing, or sample. If your tip is accepted for publication, we'll send you a contract for payment. Once we get the contract back from you, we'll pay you for your tip.

PATTERNS provides a place for readers to share charted beadwork patterns. To submit a pattern, send us an electronic or hard copy of the chart along with a finished piece, if possible. If your pattern is accepted for publication, we'll send you a contract for payment. Once we get the contract back from you, we'll pay you for your pattern.

YOUR WORK is a photo gallery of readers' beadwork. To share a beaded item, send an electronic image or a photo with a short description. If your piece is accepted for publication, you will be asked to send it to Bead&Button. When the piece arrives, it will be photographed in our studio and scheduled for publication. There is no payment for Your Work submissions; designers receive a complimentary magazine. Your piece will be returned to you in four to six weeks, along with a contract for you to return.

BEAD SOUP offers short articles about new products, books, beading-related events and other information our readers would like to know. To submit a new product or book for review, send the item to the address below. To submit other information, write to Bead&Button about your idea and we will contact you. The lead time for publication may be four to five months, depending on where your submission falls in the publication calendar. Please send electronic submissions to editor@beadandbutton.com.

2009 Portland Museum of Art Biennial

Deadline: Undisclosed

2009 Portland Museum of Art Biennial

Portland, Maine
April 9 through June 7, 2009

The call for entries for the 2009 Portland Museum of Art Biennial will be mailed in early spring of 2008. All artists who have spent time during the last 2 years (2006-2008) working in Maine are invited to submit images of their work, in any medium, for consideration by the jurors.

If you would like to be added to the mailing list, please email your mailing address to Sage Lewis slewis@portlandmuseum.org

As a series, the Biennial exhibitions create a visual record of Maine's evolving contemporary art scene and testify to the profound influence that the landscape, traditions, and people of Maine continue to have on living artists. Maine has nurtured artists for centuries, and its influence reaches far beyond its borders; although the majority of Biennial artists are residents, a number are part-time residents or recent graduates of Maine's many prestigious art programs. This blending of influences and experiences enriches the state's artistic community and helps to define its art scene as one that benefits from a diversity of traditions both established and new.

The Portland Museum of Art Biennial is made possible by the William E. and Helen E. Thon Endowment Fund.

Make It Mine Magazine

Deadline: Open/Ongoing

Make It Mine Magazine
Kalmbach Publishing Co.
Waukesha, WI

Make It Mine features in-depth articles that breakdown a variety of techniques from embroidery, sewing, and painting to stamping, decoupage, computer, and polymer clay (and anything else that fits the bill).

Our mission is to inspire our readers to cut loose with their creativity, using basic craft skills and readily available materials. Every issue is full of projects with clear step-by-step instructions and friendly advice. To inspire our readers, we also include artist profiles and beautifully photographed galleries of embellished items.

Submission Guidelines (Truncated)

STEP-BY-STEP PROJECTS Projects should begin with ready-made materials or be simple to construct. We love mixed media and use of materials and techniques in surprising ways. If your work is selected for publication, you will be contacted by an editor and asked to submit step-by-step instructions, a materials list, an introductory paragraph or two about what inspired the work, a bio and tips to help the reader complete the project. We will also give you instructions for sending your work to us for photographing in our studio. We buy all rights.

TECHNIQUE ARTICLES We are looking for technique articles that show our readers unique uses of materials and techniques or teach them the basics about a technique. How to submit: Send us a JPEG or TIFF image of your work and a description of the technique you want to write about. If your work is selected, an editor will get back to you with specific instructions. We buy all rights.

IDEA GALLERIES Our idea galleries inspire our readers to explore their creativity. They feature beautiful photographs of finished pieces with a 200-300 word description of how the piece was made, the techniques and materials used, along with a little something about the choice of materials. If your work is selected, you will receive a $25 stipend. We retain all rights to the photograph used in the magazine.

ARTIST PROFILES We are looking for profiles with some of the best craft designers and craft makers in the field. We want to know how the person got started, what inspires her/him, what techniques s/he uses and why, and the most important things s/he's learned about her/himself from crafting. The article should tell a story, giving a sense of the subject's personality and how that plays into the work. These articles generally run 1,500-2,000 words.

Hawai'i to Host 2008 International Textile Symposium

Honolulu, Hawai'i has been selected as the site for the 11th Textile Society of America Biennial Symposium set for September 24 through 27, 2008 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Textiles as Cultural Expressions will be the theme for the major international arts event being coordinated by Tom Klobe, Director Emeritus of the University of Hawai'i Art Gallery; and Reiko Brandon, renowned fiber artist and former Curator of Textiles at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The conference is open to the public. Information is available at textilesociety.org.

“Hawai‘i’s rich and especially rare collections of textiles include Hawaiian feather cloaks and Polynesian kapa cloths at the Bishop Museum, Japanese costumes and Qing Dynasty court attire at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Islamic textiles from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, and Hawaiian quilts at Mission Houses Museum and Queen Emma Summer Palace, among many others,” says conference organizer Klobe, who has a reputation for orchestrating successful community-wide arts events such as Crossings ‘97: France/Hawai‘i and Crossings 2003: Korea/Hawai‘i. “This symposium will celebrate the Pacific Rim’s strong cultural traditions in the fiber arts and provide venues for our regional fiber artists to display their work for a
worldwide audience.”
The international symposium will attract textile collectors, curators, students, educators, scholars and experts from around the world as well as highlight Hawai‘i’s own esteemed museum and private collections and knowledgeable curators. In addition to presentations of scholarly papers and panel discussions, which form the foundation of the symposium, there will be an array of textile collection tours and exhibitions that highlight the diversity of this culturally rich Pacific location.

Materialty + Meaning : Examining Fiber and Material Studies

M a t e r i a l t y + M e a n i n g :
Examining Fiber and Material Studies
in Contemporary Art and Culture

Hosted by the University of the Arts
An International Fiber Symposium
March 6 - 8, 2008

Fiber, textiles and current ideas about materiality have a new place in the world of art and culture at the beginning of the 21st century. No longer is this expression considered an eccentric, peripheral or a quirky studio practice.

To the contrary; its rich and varied material base and palate of labor-intensive construction techniques, along with a passion for “things” being made by hand are now seen as “fair game” and are being appropriated everywhere by painters, sculptors, industrial designers, architects and artists of all media. Writer and cultural critic Lydia Matthews calls it “cannibalizing,” where (after modernism) the latest forms of avant-garde practice gravitate toward “all things critical and fresh, marginal and sub-cultural.”

On the other hand, for decades material artists who identify themselves with Fiber and Textile have been crossing all media boundaries utilizing a variety of strategies commonly used by painters and sculptors, with special interest in approaches involving installation and performance. Although many emerging artists continue their interest in object making, no longer is the focus on the formal issues of color, form, structure and beauty; rather there is much greater concern for making work reflecting a personal narrative or for expressing ideas through hand made objects that have some social, political or cultural implication. Subjectivity, gender, globalization, sustainability, history and memory, community, and technology versus the handmade are a regular part of the conversation.

The notion of “materiality” is being used here not only in regard to our use of new materials. Even further, it is a concept which reflects the heightened relationship artists have with materials as a means of expressing ideas through their profound empathy and greater need to connect with the physical (sensual) world. Against the backdrop of new technology and the virtual, the notion of “materiality” is more relevant now than ever in the history of art-making.

The Philadelphia Conference, hosted by the University of the Arts in March 2008, will address issues about the state of contemporary Fiber, Textiles and material studies, and interrogate, debate and consider the place of Fiber and Textiles as an expressive force at this time.

“All Nature Sings” ...... We all have experienced those special moments when nature “sang” to us. Let your memories of those treasured times or, whatever nature provides to take your breath away, be your inspiration and guide!

The Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design (NSCCD) is working with the Art Hits the Wall (AHW) committee. This is a juried show only - adherence to the criteria will be the limiting factors. The show will not be judged (i.e. no ribbons will be awarded).

There is no entry fee.

Entrants are not required to be members of any quilting or rug hooking group but should have an interest in the development and growth of their art form. Technique is important but will not be the defining quality. The work will be evaluated on its adherance to the prescribed criteria and its interpretive perspective.

The exhibition will be held at:
Mary E. Black Gallery
1061 Marginal Road
Halifax, NS. B3H 4P6
(next to Pier 21)
Official opening Thursday, October 23, 2008

Entry Requirements
  • All entrants must have a year-round Atlantic Canadian residence.

  • Work submitted must have been created specifically for this show and this must be the first public showing of the work.

  • Only fully completed work will be accepted.

  • Maximum perimeter measurement 120” (incl.frame)

  • Work may be framed or bound and with a hidden sleeve attached across the back of the work if the artist considers it necessary.
Mary E. Black Gallery will supply “carpet tack” rods for hooked pieces and smooth rods for quilted work.

  • Work can be signed. Also, securely fasten a label on the back of the work which includes the artist’s name, address and phone number and title of the work.

Work will not be advertised as being for sale. If you notify the gallery that you wish to sell your work they will keep the information on file and request that prospective buyers to contact you directly.

An artist may submit one piece of work per medium (i.e. one hooked piece and one quilted) but they must be entered on separate forms.

An artist’s statement can be included with entry.

If possible please send a digital image or photograph of the work with your entry form. (An image/photo of the incomplete piece will be acceptable.)

Barrow-more Album Quilt Challenge

Eligibility: Artists residing in Alaska or the Yukon

Entry Fee: $10

An entry must be accompanied by a $10 entry fee and a signed copy of the entry form, to be accepted.

The traditional Baltimore Album Quilts began in Baltimore, Maryland region back in the 1840s. Elaborate appliquéd blocks were created with flowers, leaves, fruit, cornucopia, twined baskets motifs to make elegant and sophisticated designs.
Well guess what?!! It's 2007 and this is ALASKA!!! This challenge is an Alaskan twist to the Baltimore album tradition. We named it after Barrow, Alaska because.... well ....because it sounded good! Get inspired and create a “Barrow”more Album quilt with appliquéd blocks of your own original wonderful or whacky design! This is a chance to be creative. Use something Alaskan on the surface... Include some non-textiles in your appliqué. A bunch of half-baked quilters want you to use “Half-Baked Alaska” as the theme for your design!

And now for the boring, necessary stuff...

Entries must be an original design, have a minimum of three layers and be quilted. There are No minimum or maximum dimensions.

All quilts must have a hanging sleeve attached to the back at the top edge. The hanging sleeve measurements are as follows: the width of the quilt less one inch at each end and with a depth of 3 inches

What: Half (however you define it) a garment to go into our Half-Baked Alaska – 50/50 Challenge. Work alone or with others. This is a “define your own risk level” challenge. Accessories of all kinds are welcome.

How - The Rules:

1. Make it out of anything you want.

4. Have fun.

5. Make it last long enough for a runway show and a display.

Send Mary Hertert colorcreek@alaska.net an email if you are intending on participating. (just a simple “I think I am planning on doing this…”) Or, if you are not sure you want to do it by yourself, let me know early on (like summer) so I can be on the lookout for someone.

Before Christmas 2007 please send a photo, concept drawing, description, or some basic idea of what you are working on along with your name and those of your collaborators. You don’t have to be finished or even started with the garment – just an idea…
